💧 The River Coln — February vs August

These photos were taken here at Bibury Trout Farm and the difference is hard to ignore.

In February, the Coln was running incredibly high. Water was rushing through the channels, over the weirs and beneath the bridge.

Fast forward to today, and the picture is completely different.

The river is now so noticeably lower, calmer and shallower. And it’s not just a visual change, it’s a reminder of just how dry this summer has been.

England is currently experiencing one of the most serious droughts in decades, following the driest July on record. Around three-quarters of England is now officially in drought, with river flows, groundwater and reservoirs continuing to fall. (Reuters)

For a spring-fed river like the Coln, these changes matter. The river is at the heart of everything we do here at Bibury Trout Farm, and maintaining healthy, cool, flowing water is vital for the trout, the wildlife and the wider ecosystem.

February ➡️ August.

Same river. Same place. A very different story.

🌧️ Let’s hope we see some proper rainfall soon.
