✨ Mentor review from the parent ✨

"Rachel has had 1:1 sessions with Em’s which she has learnt so much. Being neurodivergent Rachel needs reassurance, guidance & supervision-Rachel got all this & more from her mentoring sessions. Rachel has had such fun, she tried different foods, which now has expanded her “enjoyed” foods. I can’t thank Em’s enough-plus it’s been lovely to not have to cook on a Tuesday. Will be booking more in the near future. 😊😊😊😊"

I can't explain how much joy this fills me with, mentoring really is something special and it really does have such a positive impact ☺️

Thank you so much ❤️

It’s always a mixed bag when a mentoring block comes to an end. On one hand, I’m incredibly proud to see how far my students have come. On the other hand, I’m definitely going to miss our weekly sessions!

Watching them progress over the last few weeks has been fantastic. They’ve gone from hesitant to confident, completely transforming how they work.

A few major highlights from this block:

Tackling Textures: Watching them fearlessly handle new textures and techniques that felt daunting on day one.

Trying New Things: Stepping out of their comfort zones and openly experimenting with new ideas.

Building Independence: Seeing that lightbulb moment when everything clicks and they just run with it.

It’s always a little tough to wrap up a journey just as things are flowing beautifully, but knowing they are walking away with a brand-new set of skills and total confidence makes it all worth it.

Let’s talk about the science of the "Velcro Child." 🧠✨

When a neurodivergent child constantly seeks intense physical proximity, it’s often viewed simply as "clinginess" or "separation anxiety." But if we look at it through a neurodevelopmental lens, it's actually a brilliant self-soothing mechanism.

When the nervous system is overwhelmed by sensory input, executive functioning demands, or emotional changes, children seek out a primary caregiver for co-regulation.

Why close proximity works:

Sensory Grounding: Deep pressure and physical contact provide reassuring proprioceptive input.

Nervous System Mirroring: They literally sync up with your steady heart rate and calm breathing.

The "Safe Base" Effect: Knowing a safe adult is physically there reduces the brain's threat response, allowing them to rest and reset (exactly what’s happening in this quiet moment ).

While it is an incredible privilege to be their safe zone, it’s also physically and emotionally demanding on parents. Acknowledging the fatigue doesn't mean you love them any less—it just means you’re human.

By understanding the why behind the behavior, we can meet our children with deeper empathy, while also remembering to extend that same grace and compassion to ourselves. 🌿

BUT I kinda agree with this, now I say kinda because for some impressionable kids, social media is the devil, it makes them believe that what they see is the truth because why wouldn't they? But we know it's a load of bull. We know ol Tanya down the road isn't really living her best life with her nice car and fancy holidays...we know that it's on tick and she's probably struggling in life and is seeking validation through strangers.

Kids don't know this, they don't see the danger, they don't understand that some of the people behind these screens are really bad and I do mean REALLY bad 😞

I won't go into it but we've had to deal with some horrific things because of social media and it is why we have a blanket ban on it. We've seen the dark side and we are not willing to let our kids participate in it.

Now why I say KINDA ... I also understand the good it can provide, the unseen side is the help it can provide for neurodivergent children with extreme interests. Watching videos they can lock into and expand their knowledge.

There are also some really great people online, some showing the truth about life, how to deal with it and just generally being awesome but this all depends on you and how it targets you, for most impressionable teens though, they won't see this side.

So I feel for parents who are going to have to deal with the utter breakdowns from the ban (if they decide to follow it of course) but I think it may very well help the next generation be just that bit kinder.

I suppose we will find out 🤷

Well I have a new favourite bake.

It didn't sell yesterday and I was THRILLED. We took it on a picnic after the fair to enjoy for lunch.

Its an early grey and cinnamon infusion tea loaf and it's absolutely smashing with a little bit 👀 of butter.

So much so that I'm making fresh today for the kids'lunches because they loved it.

I think we overlook more traditional bakes for heavy indulged chocolate and don't get me wrong, it does feel like a gorgeous treat but I think we miss out on the joy of light flavourful bakes in the process ✨

I’ve already done my big thank yous, but I couldn’t not show off the beautiful things that found their way to me yesterday.

To the wonderful person who brought me a jar of fresh sweet peas—you absolutely made my morning!

And to the incredible maker Bugs & Bones Gifts this taxidermy death moth, thank you for the wonderful swap!
It’s easily my favorite new treasure 🥹

This is exactly what people mean when they say "support local." It’s not just a transaction; it’s an exchange of passion, hard work, and genuine community spirit 🖤

If you think these places aren't worth your time, you are wrong.

Connecting with local people, whether just starting out or longstanding businesses is really something special.

Plus just look at how little the community cafe charges, as far as a browse and a lunch out, it's hard to be beaten

There really isn't a place like the Forest of Dean and I'm so incredibly proud to be a part of it.
