Opposition Councillors Clash with Cabinet Over Care Home Closures at Tense Meeting
Opposition councillors confronted Lancashire County Council’s Adult Social Care Cabinet Member Graham Dalton today, blasting his team’s handling of the proposals to close care homes as secretive and rushed. They insisted scrutiny should
have kicked in before any list of the named care homes hit the public eye. Sadly now the names are out, families are terrified, and trust is shot in this consultation process.
No impact study on residents’ well-being, no condition surveys proving the buildings are crumbling, no refurb costs spelled out. Just promises it will save money through ‘cashable benefits.’ Relocation timelines look premeditated, like they’ve already decided without real input.
One resident testimony read out; “It is not just a home, it’s where I feel safe and cared for.”
Another hit harder; “They will have to carry me out in a coffin, because I won’t leave without a fight.”
Three hundred staff jobs hang in the balance too, which seems to have been ignored as part of the proposals. Councillors demanded an urgent one-off adult care board to dissect this mess before consultation even starts stating anything less is a sham. This fell on deaf ears.
County Councillor Graham Dalton sounded dazed, dismayed mostly at the backlash hitting him, not grasping why floating closure lists sparks fury. Oblivious? Maybe. But with Reform UK fresh in power, this could snowball and people won’t forget when vulnerable lives are on the line.
We are utterly dismayed and disgusted by how that meeting went-they brushed off every concern we raised, acting like our voices don't matter. Don't sit this out; join our campaign now. We'll keep fighting in the community until Grove House stays open for good.
Thanks everyone,
