The Ye Olde Kings Head was built in 1622, on foundations dating back to the early 1200's, boasting Elizabethan fireplaces and timber recovered from one of Admiral Lord Nelsons sunken ships, this inn has many stories to tell. During a refurbishment in the 1930's, a sword was discovered hidden under the floorboards of bedroom no.4. This can now be seen hanging proudly on the wall of the bar.

A living part of our city’s past…

We love sharing the story of this wonderful building, and it goes all the way back to around 1208. It was first built as a townhouse by Peter the Clerk, a well known figure in his time, who worked as administrator to the Earl of Chester and even managed Chester Castle 🏰

He chose this spot on Lower Bridge Street, just a short walk from the castle itself, and what he started still stands today.

You'll find we're part of the famous medieval Chester Rows that unique two tiered system of covered walkways that makes our city so special. If you look closely on the middle floor, you can still see the original support pillars that have held up this place for centuries.

Over the years, the timber frame was updated and expanded, most notably in the 15th and early 17th centuries for Lord Randle Holme I.

Now we're proud to run this Grade II* listed pub and the famous My Haunted Hotel and it's not just the history that draws people in there is plenty of paranormal activity too, as you might expect from a building this old. Every corner has a story, and we're always happy to tell you more. Come and step back in time, enjoy our great food and drinks and feel the character that 800 years can bring 🕯️

📣 New additions to the bar -

We have introduced Murphy’s Irish Stout 🍻

Murphy’s offers notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and a hint of coffee, all wrapped in a velvety texture with a smooth, clean finish. It’s refreshingly light in body, making it an easy-drinking stout that still delivers rich flavour.

Also new in is Inch's Medium Apple Cider 🍎

This Cider is a lightly sparkling cider with a fresh apple aroma – perfect for sunshine sipping.

Inch’s Cider is made with British apples, grown within 40 miles from their Herefordshire mill.
