It is with profound sadness that I share the news that Paul, my much-loved husband, Father to Mathew & Olivia, Brother and Uncle and friend to many, passed away peacefully last night, surrounded by family and friends.
Paul was known and loved by so many people throughout his life. Some will remember him from his days at Llanedeyrn High School, others through one of the many sports he played — especially rugby, including his time playing for Pontypridd RFC and Llandaff RFC during the 1970s and 80s.
Many will know Paul from the pubs and restaurants we ran over the years, from The Ruperra to The Deri, The Hollybush to The Chainbridge, and most recently Hammer & Tongs café. He also made incredible friends during our time in Usk at The Black Bear Inn and The Chainbridge Inn, and those friendships meant so much to him.
Paul was a chef for most of his life and worked tirelessly right up until 28th January 2026. Anyone who knew him will know how dedicated he was. He worked six days a week, rarely taking a day off, because he never wanted to let anyone down.
To so many people, Paul was more than just the chef behind the counter. He was a friend. He loved talking to people while he cooked their breakfasts and lunches, and he genuinely cared about everyone who walked through the door.
Many of you will remember his kindness. The extra egg, bacon or sausage that somehow found its way onto your plate because he thought you’d enjoy it. The times he would say, “Don’t worry, pay me when you can,” because he couldn’t bear the thought of anyone going hungry. That was Paul — generous to a fault, kind-hearted, and always willing to help someone who needed it.
Others may remember the colourful exchanges between us in the kitchen. There were plenty of lively moments over the years, and Paul would usually give a smile or a cheeky wink as if to say, “I’ve done it again — she’s got the hump with me.” Those moments became part of the entertainment and brought laughter to so many people.
The café was never just a business to us. It was our life, our community, and a place where so many friendships were made. Through Hammer & Tongs, we met the most incredible people, many of whom became such good friends. Having to close because of Paul’s ill health was one of the hardest decisions we ever had to make, and we both missed it immensely.
Paul also made lifelong friends through rugby, especially at NHSOB, and we will always treasure the memories of the tours, the laughter, and the special times shared with the kids and families over the years.
Paul leaves behind countless happy memories and a legacy of kindness, hard work, generosity, friendship and laughter. We hope everyone who knew him will remember him with a smile and think of the little things he did that made people feel welcome, valued and cared for.
On behalf of myself and our family, thank you for all the love, support, friendship and kindness you have shown us over the years. It has meant more than you will ever know.
Rest peacefully, Paul. You will be loved, missed and remembered always.
We will share funeral arrangements in due course.
