Our family has always loved food. In the 70s, my parents ran a humble restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My three brothers and I would help in the kitchen after school. That was where my love of food began. My father had an inspiring philosophy about food. He would wake up at 5am every morning and travel 20 miles to find the freshest meats, fish, and local vegetables to bring back to our restaurant to cook.

I emigrated to Wales in 1982 when I was 23. All I had was £150 in my pocket and a dream to work with food.

In 1993, the same year my daughter was born, I established Ethnic Cuisine. We were Sainsbury’s biggest supplier of Chinese ready meals across the UK. From humble beginnings, I grew the business with my brother, Steve, from 20 employees to 400. We were making approximately 300,000 ready meals per week, and we brought our wonderful mother over from Malaysia to show her what we had achieved. She was so proud to see our family values come to life in such a large way.

After we sold Ethnic Cuisine, I wanted to continue my food journey but this time, I wanted to get to know the people who would be eating our food. And so, I created Yakitori 1 with my business partner, KK.

My father’s philosophy and my learnings from Ethnic Cuisine lie at the heart of Yakitori1. We are a family business built on family values. We combine the freshest, highest quality ingredients with craftsmanship and discipline to make delicious food packed full of flavour. And with us, everyone is welcome.
