⛳️ Sharing the love with our fantastic hosts

Yesterday, our Men’s team was out on the road competing in two brilliant events across the region. One squad headed over to Links Golf Club Newmarket for the CAGU - Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Greensomes League, while another battled it out in the Matchplay Golf | Academia at the stunning Heacham Manor Golf Club

While the scorecards didn't quite swing in our favour this time, we couldn't have asked for a better day of golf. Both venues were absolute class from start to finish. The hospitality was top-tier, and both courses were playing absolutely superbly 👌

A massive thank you to the teams, staff, and members at both Newmarket and Heacham Manor for being such perfect hosts and welcoming the Girton crew so warmly. Despite the results, what a privilege it was to play at two spectacular venues.

Proud of the lads for giving it their all and representing the club so well. Let's show them some support in the comments below! 👇🏌️‍♂️💪

⛳️ DUEL IN THE SUN ⛳️

4–2. Home. Against Gog Magog Golf Club. In 30-degree heat.

That is the Royal Girton Scratch Team

🔥 Wednesday night at Girton was something else entirely. With the thermometer nudging past 30 degrees, we hosted one of the strongest sides in the CAGU - Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Division — and what followed was 18 holes of grit, character, and moments that will not be forgotten in a hurry.

Our top pairing found themselves 3 down after nine holes against opponents firing four under gross. Most teams would have wilted. Not this one. They won five of the next six holes to turn the match completely on its head and stand 2 up on the 17th tee. That is the mentality this squad has built.

Our middle pairing faced two US golf scholarship students, both playing off plus 3, and gave absolutely everything. The opposition were simply outstanding on the day and edged it 2 and 1 — no shame in that whatsoever.

Our final pairing, playing together for the first time, produced a brilliant 2-up win that set the stage for one of the most dramatic finishes the club has seen.

⛳️ THE FINALE
It all came down to the top match on 18. Both teams on the green. Supporters and players from every pairing gathered around the putting surface. You could not have scripted it better.
Our Scratch Vice-Captain played an incredible chip to three feet, and with the match — and two crucial league points — on the line, his partner stepped up and holed it. The cheer said everything.

A historic 4–2 win. Two points banked. Division One fight very much alive. 🏆

A FOND FAREWELL
Before we look ahead, we want to say a proper thank you to Peter Dean, who played his last match for the Scratch Team for a while, as he will not be renewing his membership.

Peter, you have been a huge part of what this team is about, and it was entirely fitting that you were the one standing over that final putt. We will miss you on the fairways — but we hope to see you for a well-earned beer or two after the Club Championship. Thank you for everything. 🙏

🏆 THE DIVISION ONE FIGHT
This result matters enormously. We are now level on points with Gog Magog and locked in a three-way battle to stay in Division One alongside St Neots.

Three games left. Everything is still to play for. This is where Girton belongs, and this squad will not stop until the job is done.
Remaining fixtures :
1 July — St Ives, away
7 July — St Neots, away
15 July — Ely, home

Whether you can be there in person or are following along online, your support genuinely makes a difference to this team. Keep it coming. ⛳️

🙏 THANK YOU
Huge thanks to everyone who came out in the heat — El Presidente Pally, Hugh Carlisle, Neil Cooke, Bernie Yates, Dylan Loom, Seb Heinrich, Anthony Wilson, Chris and Logan Cooke, and Robert Smart. Your presence on a night like that means the world.

And to Skipper Steve Power — alongside the team from the first tee to the final putt, driving everyone forward when it mattered most. Exactly the leadership this group deserves.

Well, the Met Office has spoken, and Cambridge is officially a furnace this week. With an Amber Extreme Heat Warning in place through to Thursday and temperatures nudging past 35°C, conditions out on the course are going to be serious — and we want every single one of you to come home in one piece.

So yes, we absolutely want you out there enjoying the game, but please take a moment to read through a few reminders before you head out.

Stay hydrated. And we mean properly hydrated — not just a sip from the water station on the 9th. Bring a large bottle, refill it, and keep sipping throughout your round. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already behind.

Wear sunscreen. SPF 30 minimum, applied before you leave home, and reapplied at the turn. UV levels this week are high, and the course offers very little shade on the back nine.

Cover up where you can. A wide-brimmed hat or cap is your best friend out there. Lightweight, breathable clothing in light colours will make a real difference over 18 holes.

Tee off early if you are able to. The cooler morning slots are genuinely worth booking for a round like this. Peak heat lands around midday, so if you can be finishing up by then, all the better.

Know when to call it. There is no shame in picking up and heading in if you are not feeling right. Heat exhaustion is no joke, and no scorecard is worth your health.

We will see you out there — just please take good care of yourselves.

Stay cool, Girton.

Saturday brings the start of one of the most cherished competitions in our calendar here at Girton Golf Club.

The Hewett Goblets Round 1 tees off this weekend, and there is real history behind the trophy. Presented in 1978 by Mr and Mrs Harry Hewett to mark the opening of our eighteen-hole course, the goblets were chosen with a beautiful intention in mind — that the winner would actually use them at home, not simply put them on a shelf. Each one carries the engraving G.G.C., and the silver plate on the case holds the names of every champion who has lifted it since.

It is a members-only strokeplay competition off the white tees, and with Round 1 underway this Saturday, players should bear in mind that entry covers both rounds. If any member needs to withdraw from Round 2, please let the Competition Secretary know as soon as possible.

Good luck to everyone on the draw. The spirit that built this club is very much alive in a competition like this one.

It is match day for Girton Golf Club as the team make the trip to Ely City Golf Club for a Division One fixture in the CAGU - Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Scratch Foursomes League.

Foursomes is one of the most demanding formats in amateur golf. Sharing a single ball with your partner means every decision, every swing, and every putt is a joint effort. It takes communication, composure, and a lot of mutual trust.

The boys are out there right now doing Girton proud. We will bring you the result as soon as it is confirmed. Come on, Royal Girton Scratch Team

Whether you are chasing glory, simply enjoying a round with good company, or both, this is a day not to be missed.

This year we are proud to be supporting Blue Smile Cambridge as our chosen charity. Blue Smile is a Cambridgeshire children's mental health charity that provides expert, arts-based therapy and support in local schools to children aged 3 to 13. Their therapists work directly with children who are struggling with difficult emotions, giving them the tools to feel happier, build resilience, and enjoy their childhood. Since their founding in 2010, they have helped over 3,000 children across the county. Every pound raised on the day will go towards continuing that vital work.

Booking is open now on the HowDidiDo app. Get your place secured early, as spaces will fill quickly. Loads more information will be coming your way over the coming weeks, so keep an eye on our page.

See you on the first tee.

Royal Girton Scratch Team Victory — CAGU - Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union Scratch Foursomes Division 1

What a night at Girton Golf Club. The Scratch Team came away with a brilliant 4-2 win over St Neots Golf Club in Division 1 of the CAGU Scratch Foursomes, and it was a performance to be proud of from top to bottom.

Mike Evans and Jack Thorpe missed out, closing out their pairing 3 and 1. Neil Cowie and Luke Bowers put in the most dominant display of the evening, winning convincingly by 7 and 6.

Sota Katano and Richard Heyes completed the scoring, winning their match by 2 holes to wrap up a comprehensive team victory.

A huge well done to all six players who represented the club last night. two wins from three Girton pairings tells its own story. Onwards and upwards.

Come on, Girton. 🔵🔴
