Callanish Alpacas

Callanish Alpacas CALLANISH ALPACAS is a charity run drop-in visitor centre located directly on the Hebridean Way in sight of Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis.

A café, double decker bus, gift shop and toilet are on site. Tours of the animals are available at no cost. We are open until the end of October with hours detailed at the bottom of this info. Alpacaccinos Café with a turquoise double decker bus as a seating/viewing area are recent additions. Callanish Alpacas is a family run visitor centre located near to the world famous Callanish Stones on the

beautiful Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. We offer drop-in visits and informal tours during opening hours; no booking is required. We can also organise pre-arranged appointments out of hours when possible. We have 10 adult female alpacas (Caskie, Bella, Petra, Martina, Pandora, Osprey, Petula, Alice, Aurelia and Amy), 1 young male alpaca (Domino) and 5 cria (Lily, Loki, Odin, Thora and Zeus). Humpty, Dumpty and Wallace are ridiculously tame Kunekune pigs who were initially eyed with suspicion by the alpacas! We have 8 rare breed four-horned Hebridean sheep (Dafydd, Dai, Delilah, Dwt, Venetia, Dewi, Raleigh and their impressive father Leo). We can’t of course fail to mention Dougal "the tour guide" sheep along with Havana and her twins Zebedee and Zachary who are Zwartble sheep and are extremely friendly. We also have many breeds of unusual looking chickens (Silkie, Pekin, Pilkie, Silver Laced Wyandotte, bantam Partridge Wyandotte, a Barnevelder, Polish Crested, bantam Modern Game, Rosecomb, bantam Scot’s Grey, Frizzle, Sizzle, Sablepoot, Chabo and Serama…the world’s smallest breed of chicken!), peafowl, turkeys and ducks of various comical and striking breeds (Indian Runner ducks, Call ducks, Mandarin ducks, Carolina ducks, Muscovy ducks, Khaki Campbell crosses and rescued wild ducks including rare white mallards). All of our animals have names and unique personalities! Please note that the whereabouts of the animals is weather-dependent. There is no charge but a voluntary donation towards the cost of keeping the alpacas and other animals is welcomed. There is a gift shop on site. We are located at 20 Callanish on the A858 100 yards past the main Callanish Stones turn-off coming from the Stornoway direction. Hope to see you soon! OPENING HOURS :

Happy “Summer Solstice” Birthday Petra. Still meditating despite being mid-air at shearing yesterday! Thank you Shear Alpacas ❤️

SOUND UP! Alpaca choir; albeit discordant. The poor alpacas are showing their indignance at having been shut in the stable pre-shearing tomorrow so they stay pristine and dry.

Please don’t let this happen the day before shearing 😳 The alpacas couldn’t resist bathing in a peaty pond despite our protestations. It doesn’t help that the ring leader on this occasion was Caskie the matriarch. Where she goes, they all go!

Thank you to our pre-existing followers and also to our many new followers. The little reel I posted a few days ago of the love story between a wild teal and a female mallard on our croft has reached over 1 MILLION views 😳

Despite the size difference this wild teal has paired up with the same female mallard for several years. They frequent the croft daily. The year before last, clearly daunted by parenthood they left their brood of 11 tiny ducklings on our doorstep! We had the honour of watching them grow up and noticed that although the mature offspring (who still hang about here) have no colouration they are smaller, paler and have different patterns of markings compared to a mallard.
