Poole's Cavern is a two million year old limestone cave that first opened to the public in the 1850s. Described as one of ‘The seven wonders of the Peak’, curious visitors have explored the chambers under candlelight. Visitors today are escorted in comfort and safety through the beautifully illuminated chambers by enthusiastic guides who will unfold the fascinating story of the cavern’s history, myths and legend. Archaeologists have discovered thousands of remains, many of which are on display in the Visitor Centre. Enjoy a lunch or snack with us at , with homemade cakes and daily specials on offer. Alternatively picnic in the grounds or country park. Browse our gift shop for the perfect memento or gift . We stock a range of local crafts, gemstones and toys. Complete your day and take a stroll through Buxton Country Park: 100 acres of beautiful sheltered woodland. Meet Charlie the lime burner and other woodland sculptures along the way to Solomon’s Temple viewpoint with commanding views of the Peak District from the summit of Grin Low at 1400 feet above sea level. Did you know? October is Bat Appreciation Month! 🦇

Here at Poole's Cavern, we are home to many different species of bats! If you're visiting us soon, who knows? Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to see one in the cavern! ✨

Our guides are very diligent about keeping a record of any bat sightings here at Poole's Cavern, and we have a 'Bat Book' by our front desk that dates back to 2015! If you'd like to learn about the sightings we have or where in our cavern they tend to hide out, come speak to us at the front desk! 😊

While you're here, why not also pick up some of the bat merchandise we have? 🦇 We've got plenty on offer in our Gift Shop, including jewellery, books, and soft toys!

🌳 VOLUNTEERS WANTED 🦋

Generation Hope Buxton is looking for young people aged 13-25 to join our new climate, heritage and nature project, part of the Fixing Our Broken Planet programme in partnership with the Natural History Museum, London.

You could help as a:
🪲Wildlife Survey Volunteer: Help record species and contribute to Woodland Watch.
📸Photography Volunteer: Capture the changing landscape, wildlife and project activities.
🔍Heritage Research Volunteer: Investigate the history of Grin Low's quarrying and lime-burning past.
🏛Interpretation Volunteer: Create videos, social media content and exhibition displays.

Interested? Come and find out more about the project, as we start discussing how Buxton's heritage has impacted climate change today.

🌍 HAPPY UNESCO INTERNATIONAL GEODIVERSITY DAY! 🪨

Today we’re celebrating the incredible geology beneath our feet here at Poole’s Cavern and Buxton Country Park!

To mark the day, we’re hosting a small, free geodiversity exhibition in our School Room, where you can discover more about the geology of Poole’s Cavern and the surrounding landscape.

🪨 Rocks and minerals, including real geological specimens
🦴 Our fossil discovery dig box – perfect for younger explorers
🕳️ Cave science and the experiments taking place inside the cavern
🌍 The geological processes that have helped shape our local landscape

🎺 Fairfield Brass Band will open the evening with 45 minutes of festive brass favourites in our Visitor Centre, before a short interval and then a journey underground…

🎶 Christmas Sing-Along in the Cave
Once inside the cavern, singer, performer and musical director Ray Mcleod will lead us through 45 minutes of Christmas favourites, and you’re invited to join in!

With the natural acoustics of the cavern, festive lighting and the sound of voices echoing through the rock formations, this promises to be a Christmas experience you won’t forget.
