When people say “support small businesses”, this is exactly what they mean.
In a town where so many pubs are owned by breweries, pub companies and big corporate groups, there’s still a little old pub on Moorgate doing things the old-fashioned way.
The Cotton Tree.
Records show the Cotton Tree at 60 Moorgate as far back as 1871 — over 150 years of history within these walls. 🍺
And we know something else comes with a pub that old…
A reputation.
We know some people in Bury still have an opinion of the Cotton Tree based on what they remember from years ago — before our family ever took it over.
But pubs change. People change. And this pub has changed.
Our family has now been here for 21 years, and for all of those 21 years we have owned the actual freehold building AND run the pub ourselves.
No brewery owns us.
No huge pub company is behind us.
No corporate head office.
No big pot of money when something goes wrong.
Just a local family trying to keep a proper Bury pub going.
When the roof needs repairing, the cellar breaks or the bills shoot up — it’s us that pays for it. When trade is quiet, we feel every empty seat.
And when you spend your money over our bar, it isn’t disappearing into the accounts of a huge national pub company.
You’re supporting a local family, local staff and helping keep one of Bury’s old pubs alive. ❤️
We’ve worked hard to make the Cotton Tree a friendly, welcoming pub where people can have a drink, watch the football, enjoy our karaoke, bingo and entertainment and have a laugh without the trouble some people may associate with the pub from many years ago.

We’ve also been researching Bury’s remaining pubs and, so far, we haven’t found another currently trading traditional Bury pub where the same family has owned the freehold AND continuously run the pub themselves for 21 years.
We’re not a big company and we’re certainly not backed by millions. 😂
We’re the small fry competing against businesses with much deeper pockets.
What we DO have is our family, our staff, our amazing regulars and the people of Bury who choose to support us.
