Madame Curry…A Christmas Soiree!
Let me tell you about the Durban Christmas party…firstly, there was never a theme. The host would prepare a range of curries and out the blue there would be a roasted leg of lamb or a whole roasted turkey in the mix.
The aunties although warned not to bring anything could not resist and would arrive with their signature dishes along to ‘put show’ as we say in our Durban lingo. I am still not entirely certain if it was genuine love or sometimes the ever so slight desire to upstage the hostess. What I can say for sure is the aunties got competitive.
As children, we loved to taste and experiment with the dishes that were unusual and not part of the ‘house food’ offering. So, imagine the death stares you would get from your mom and gran when you loaded your plate with some other aunty’s crumbed chicken or grilled prawns. We would smack our lips and lick our fingers being encouraged by the standard phrase, ‘Eat khanna (darling), Eat’.
There were times when I am sure we all wished we didn’t have to get into the car and endure the ride home because you just knew there would be words…guaranteed there would be no ‘khanna khanna’ in the car. All this over a crumbed chicken drumstick!
This December, I am delighted to announce
Madame Curry takes a step forward with a Christmas Soiree. It promises to be a night of home cooked deliciousness, feasting and memories transporting you back to the many Durban homes and kitchens where there was true love served on a plate.
We will be curating menus and creating feasts served in a home where guests get to enjoy old school Durban Indian warmth and hospitality so if you’re looking for love, curry and warmth, this is just the night out for you!
