After the fantastic response to our last jazz night, we’re doing it again — only this time, Jonny’s bringing the quartet.

Jonny Bruce is an absolutely phenomenal trumpet player whose career has taken him from Ronnie Scott’s to the Royal Albert Hall, playing alongside some seriously impressive names including Fred Wesley, P*e Wee Ellis, Art Themen, The Wailers, McFly, Roni Size, Hamish Stuart, Kelis, Emma Smith, Clare Martin and Clare Teal.

His trumpet has been heard on film and television, including the BBC series The Outlaws, and he’s performed at venues and festivals across Europe.

And now he’s coming back to our little pub in Knowle — this time with the full quartet. ❤️

This isn’t background jazz while you quietly finish your chips.

This is four brilliant musicians, playing properly live, just a few feet away from you.

And that’s exactly the sort of thing we want to keep doing here.

Brilliant musicians. Proper live performances. Good food. A room full of people. And the chance to see artists you’d normally expect to travel considerably further to watch.

Live music in pubs matters.

There’s something bloody brilliant about being able to sit with a pint, a few feet away from musicians of this calibre, and watch them do what they do.

No enormous arena.
No binoculars.
No £9 pint.

Just four superb musicians playing live in a 99-year-old Freehouse in Knowle.

🎤🍻 KARAOKE — FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 🍻🎤

Three karaoke nights in one month, you say?

Well… yes, actually. 😂

We know we normally spread the madness out a little more than that, but our karaoke nights have become such a bloody good night that every now and again we reckon it’s worth letting everyone play out a bit more than usual.

So we’re doing it again.

If you’ve been to one of our karaoke nights before, you’ll know.

People come in saying they’re definitely not singing.
They sing.

People promise they’re only staying for one.
They don’t.

And somewhere along the way the whole pub seems to get involved.

Good singers, terrible singers and the gloriously overconfident — everyone gets a go.

It’s loud, it’s daft, it’s friendly and it’s become one of our favourite nights at the pub.

So yes. Three in one month.

🎺 THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY SPECIAL NIGHT AT THE DOG AND DONKEY. 🎺

On Wednesday 30th September, we’re welcoming the Jonny Bruce Quartet to The Dog And Donkey for an evening of live jazz.

And if you don’t know the name Jonny Bruce yet, have a look at who he’s played with.

Fred Wesley. P*e Wee Ellis. Art Themen. The Glenn Miller Orchestra UK. Chris Barber. The Wailers. McFly. And many, many more.

His trumpet has taken him from Ronnie Scott’s to the Royal Albert Hall, festivals across Europe, countless sessions for film and television, and onto the BBC drama The Outlaws.

And now he’s bringing his quartet to a little pub in Knowle. ❤️

That’s exactly the sort of thing we want The Dog And Donkey to be doing.

Not just putting something on in the corner of the pub, but bringing genuinely brilliant musicians into our community and creating nights that you might normally expect to travel to Exeter, Bristol or considerably further afield to see.

🧠🍺 QUIZ NIGHT AT THE DOG AND DONKEY! 🍺🧠

Right then… who’s feeling clever?

Our next Quiz Night is Wednesday 23rd September from 19:30 — an evening of questionable knowledge, confident wrong answers, arguments over things nobody actually knows, and at least one person saying “I literally said that!” after every answer. 😂

💷 £3 per person
👥 Maximum 6 per team
🏆 Bragging rights very much included.

We’ll be serving food beforehand, so get yourselves in early, grab a table, get fed and work out which member of the team is actually useful before the questions start.

Whether you’re frighteningly good at general knowledge or your main contribution is knowing obscure 90s TV theme tunes, you’re welcome.

🚁❤️ SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER — THIS ONE MEANS A LOT TO US. ❤️🚁

Next Saturday we’re getting together at The Dog And Donkey to raise as much money as we possibly can for Devon Air Ambulance.

And there’s a very simple reason why.

A local guy, Freddie, is still here today because they were there when he needed them.

That’s what this night is about.

Freddie will be joining us — and singing himself — alongside guest singers for a night of live music, laughs, good people and hopefully a LOT of money raised for the people who helped save his life.

Sunday has arrived, which means there’s really only one important question…

Who’s cooking lunch?

Because it doesn’t have to be you. 😂

We’re open from 12:00 today, with Sunday lunch served from 12:00–15:00, or until we run out.

Proper Sunday roasts, good portions and none of the shopping, peeling, cooking or mountain of washing-up afterwards.

And if a roast isn’t your thing, no problem. We’ve also got some of our usual favourites available:
