Twyford Hold Their Nerve to Clinch Thrilling Eight-Run Victory
Division 4B – Saturday 1 August
Twyford 177 all out (45.4 overs) beat Chinnor 169 all out (51.3 overs) by 8 runs
Twyford produced a determined all-round performance to edge out Chinnor in a gripping Division 4B contest, defending a modest total of 177 with discipline, patience and some exceptional bowling.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat on a hard, sun-baked wicket, Twyford found themselves under early pressure. However, a superb innings from Muhammad Naeem Khan steadied the ship. Displaying patience and composure, he struck 75 from 132 balls, including 11 fours and a six, anchoring the innings while wickets fell around him. Useful contributions from Umar Farooq (26), Sam Roberts (13) and Thomas Cook (11) helped Twyford reach a competitive 177, with valuable extras also boosting the total.
Chinnor’s reply began steadily, with opener Ollie Rogers digging in for a well-made 60, but Twyford’s bowlers never allowed the chase to get away from them.
The standout performance came from Billy Harper, who produced a magnificent spell with the ball. Bowling 18 overs, including five maidens, Harper returned outstanding figures of 5-46, repeatedly breaking crucial partnerships and putting Chinnor under relentless pressure. His accuracy, consistency and ability to strike at key moments turned the match firmly in Twyford’s favour, making it one of the finest bowling spells of the season.
Harper’s victims included James Shrimpton, James Reynoldson, Kevin Slatter, George Harman and Paul Brzezicki, reducing Chinnor from a promising position into a side fighting simply to stay alive in the contest.
The fielding matched the quality of the bowling, with Kenny Massey producing two outstanding catches that proved pivotal. His first was a superb take to remove the dangerous Ollie Rogers for 60, ending the innings that had anchored Chinnor’s chase, before following it up with another excellent catch to dismiss Tom Folley, helping ensure the visitors never built the late momentum they needed.
Excellent support came from Muhammad Naeem Khan (2-54 from 18 overs), whose economical spell kept the pressure firmly on, while Umar Farooq (2-39) chipped in with important wickets late in the innings. Zaima Khan claimed the final wicket to seal the victory as Chinnor were dismissed for 169 after 51.3 overs.
The eight-run win was built on determination in the field and disciplined bowling, with every wicket proving crucial in a tense finish. Twyford’s bowlers stuck to their plans superbly, while sharp fielding, highlighted by Massey’s brilliant catching, ensured every opportunity was taken.
While Naeem Khan’s composed 75 laid the foundation with the bat, Billy Harper’s exceptional 18-over spell of 5-46 will rightly take the headlines, supported by a superb all-round team performance that secured a deserved victory and a valuable 25 league points for Twyford.
