300 yards. That’s how far Mark and Emily drove this morning. Smugglers Hotel to Brixham Fish Market. In the gator wagon at sunrise

Brixham Fish Market is one of the most famous in England. The boats come in overnight. By morning the market is alive.

This is what they came back with.

John Dory. Lemon sole. Torbay sole. Megrim. Scallops. Bass. Mackerel. Sea bream. Lobster.

All caught in Brixham. All hand selected by the owners this morning.

We have just secured our licence to buy direct from the market. No middleman. No overnight delivery. No guessing how fresh it is.

And some of it is heading inland. To our sister restaurant the Dartmoor Inn, Merrivale, where it will also meet a live fire grill in the middle of Dartmoor National Park.

For those who walking the South West Coast Path, we are here.

The path passes through Brixham, and we are proud to be recognised as part of the journey. After a long day along the cliffs, a refurbished room, a proper shower and dinner over open fire carry a particular appeal. Fish landed locally. Grass-fed beef from a family we have known for over fifty years. Breakfast included before you continue. Walkers have begun securing their Late Spring nights and availability across peak weekends is narrowing.

In 1851, a smuggler hid in a coffin here.
The notorious Devon smuggler Bob Elliot escaped the revenue men by hiding in a coffin built in what is now our reception. Walk through our front door and you are walking into that story. The building dates back to the 17th century, and its history isn’t manufactured or polished for effect. It’s real. That sense of character and authenticity runs through everything we are building here.

Our Car Park Concierge service is available when booking directly with us and can be arranged by phone if booking elsewhere. It allows you to step out of the car and into the stay without distraction. As Late Spring weekends continue to be spoken for, that ease becomes part of the experience.

Late spring at Smugglers has quietly become one of the most requested times to stay.

There is something about this time of year in Brixham. The harbour holds its rhythm without the height of summer pace. The coast path is vivid and the evenings comfortably stretch into dinner.
All fourteen rooms have now been refurbished, carefully updated within the character of this 17th century building.
Breakfast is included, mornings begin slowly and the town feels entirely itself.
