Nestled perfectly in the warm belly of Hamilton House, The Canteen emerged in 2009 out of the creative inspiration and collective efforts of a bunch of Stokes Croft and Bristol brilliants. From day one we wanted to offer outstanding free live music, affordable homecooked food made with heaps of love and ingredients sourced as locally as we could manage and moreover we wanted to make a place for all to come, a hub, a hotspot, for it to take on it's own direction and to meet and serve the community that drives it forward. Now serving a totally vegetarian menu throughout the week and amazing vegan and veggie roasts on Sunday! It's generally about celebration, bring it down to the Canteen, and share it out. We love to have you by.

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEK: 5TH - 11TH OCTOBER

From a cosy, acoustic start to the week, to an electronic set with haunted frequencies - we're really embracing October here at The Canteen.

MON 5TH - The Singer/Songwriter Sessions
Are you feeling the cosy season set in yet? You will be after this: stripped-back acoustic sets, warm atmosphere, and a rotating line-up of Bristol-based artists.

TUE 6TH - Riddim
roots reggae and dub session, hosted by drummer Alex Dawson . Accompanied by £5 Gravity pints - this one's a no-brainer!

WED 7TH - The Canteen Salsa Social
Bristol Latin legends Spoon Lips play the Latin hits, here at The Canteen every month. Expect the energy of a descarga salsa night in New York in the heart of Bristol, and be ready to dance!

THU 8TH - Ben Baddoo & the High-Life 3
has amassed a huge repertoire of rhythms over his years of training, and is here to share them with Bristol! Come prepared to sing, dance, and connect with all the richness and rhythm of Ghana.

FRI 9TH - Cavolo Nero (+ DJ Paulo Fernandez)
have come all the way from Utrecht to share their irresistibly danceable sound and brand new debut album with you! Exotic rhythms with modern club influences and psychedelia, inspired by funk, disco, and afrobeat. Followed by DJ Paulo Fernandez til late!

SAT 10TH - MĀDŁY & Komposa ft. Mr Fitz DJ (+ DJ Alcemyth)
is a multilingual singer, rapper, and poet, whose work weaves together the threads of Neo-soul, Nu-jazz, and hip hop. Hard hitting flows combined with Soulful Melodic and jazz influenced sounds from .

AMBIENT TRANSMISSIONS - NEXT SUNDAY

(snooker ace, modular synth explorer) and (Electronic Sound) return for another DJ set of ambient and downtempo music from the outer reaches.
Expect haunted frequencies, atmospheric electronics, hypnotic drones, radiophonic echoes, cosmic signals, slow-motion grooves, subtle beats, sonic esoterica and strange vibrations. Turn on, tune in, zone out.

03 OCT - CGC Soundsystem presents: Stokes Croft Sub Sessions: CGC Sound System invite Brighton's Ites Vibration & Heavytone HiFi to Stokes Croft Sub Session for one of the biggest Canteen sound meetings of the year. See ya in the dance!

07 OCT - Canteen Salsa Social: Bristol Latin legends Spoon Lips play the Latin hits LIVE! Expect the energy of a descarga salsa night in New York in the heart of Bristol, bring your friends, and get ready to dance!

09 OCT - Cavolo Nero: This psychedlic groove band has come all the way from Utrecht, The Netherlands to share their debut album and irresistibly danceable sound with Bristol. Don't let them down!

14 OCT - Cowboy my Choreo Line Dancing: Learn to line dance for FREE! Led by instructor Georgia, and set to the rhythm of your favourite country songs, you'll be shuffling the night away. Dress up encouraged!

16 OCT - Poor Old Dogs: Beer-soaked mayhem and foot-stomping energy, raucous tunes and wild stories. Plus it's an album launch, so there's every excuse for a celebratory pint (or three)!

17 OCT - Conker Tournament + Down Stokes: The infamous Canteen Conker Tourney returns for its fifth year running! If you haven't prepped your costume, entry music and battle name yet, it's time to start. Close out the night with Goblyns as part of Down Stokes Festival's Saturday line up. What a day!

19 OCT - David Celia: a rare solo show at the Canteen for David Celia, as part of his UK tour. If you like The Beatles, alt-folk or astonishing guitar performances, this is the gig for you.

31 OCT - Alchemy Audio Presents: The Galactic Graveyard: Our HALLOWEEN SPECIAL! A galactic journey through cultures, with heavy bass throughout. Tons of talent on the line up, plus pumpkin carving, dress up and prizes to be won.

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEK: 28TH SEPTEMBER - 4TH OCTOBER

This week we cover folk and funk, swing and soul - seeing us into a busy weekend of live music from an array of artists.

Here's what's coming up:

MON 28TH - The Canteen Folk Session
Join us for an evening of authentic folk and acoustic music in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. All traditional musicians welcome to bring their instrument along and get involved!

TUE 29TH - Everyday
Formed in Bristol in 2025, this four-piece band has one goal: reach the people that want to listen (or better still, to dance!) to a brand new instrumental sound. Their set will be part originals, part covers, all groove.

WED 30TH - Jack Challoner Quartet
Another four-piece lineup, this time delivering swing, blues and soul into The Canteen. Fronted by Jack Challoner and backed by a stellar rhythm and horn section, this it sure to get you on your feet.

THU 1ST - Beat Cleaver presents: Cypher Space
An open mic/live jam hybrid, celebrating all forms of vocal expression. Freestyle, rap, poetry, singing, beatboxing - plus solo showcases, collabs, freestyle games and a massive cypher to close out the night. Come find your voice!

FRI 2ND - Total Clusterfunk
A rollercoaster ride in the form of brass funk classics and supreme soul gems. What a way to welcome in the weekend!

SAT 3RD - CGC Soundsystem presents: Stokes Croft Sub Sessions
One of the biggest Canteen sound meetings of the year: Heavytone HiFi and Ites Vibration takeover The Canteen's stage. They've kept Brighton's dub scene alive and pumping - come show them what Bristol's about!

SUN 4TH - Live Bristol (5PM start)
Our monthly talent showcase for emerging artists, aiming to provide a platform for all individuals and a diverse mix of genres. As always: family friendly and all welcome.

Tonight the Canteen Ceilidh returns to The Canteen for a free night of communal dancing with a live band!

Head down for dancing from 8:30pm with live music from Gina Griffin on fiddle, Stevie Fry on drums and Sam Stennett on guitar, all led by our caller Lotte Nørgaard guiding you through the dances.

Free entries and all abilities welcome. We can't wait to see you there!

Our new monthly acoustic blues jam. All players invited to join in - listeners welcome too.

TUE 22ND - Zubieta & the Suaves
Don't let the warmth of summer be only a memory! This bossa nova and Latin jazz will bring the sun back into your heart.

WED 23RD - Canteen Ceilidh
No experience needed - just be ready to dance, and bring some friends along. With Lotte guiding you through the dances, and Ross Grand and Sam Stennett providing live folk music, you'll be leaving with a massive smile on your face.

THU 24TH - Milon
With the crispest of rhythm sections, saxophonist Dino Christodoulou weaves his own soundtrack ranging from classic modern jazz to Cypriot wedding dances and Greek traditional tunes, all explored in a spirit of free improvisation.

FRI 25TH - Stone Cold Hustle
Groove meets neo-soul at the hands of this Bristol-born band. Their reputation for starting the party and keeping it going precedes them - why not come and see what the fuss is all about?

SAT 26TH - Ya Freshness
A true party for the ears, hosted by the British King of Ska and his Big Boss Band. Get caught up in a flurry of horns, keys, guitar hooks, unbeatable beats and boisterous bonhomie.

SUN 27TH - Sunday Sessions w/ DJ Anessen
Beat the Sunday scaries with another kind of beat altogether. With DJs on the decks all night long, you'll be partying til 2am!
