Independently owned, community focused AND they have aircon!? 😅 Rooted Coffee Company might just be the place to be during this heatwave (ad)
I’ve driven past Rooted so many times and never popped in… But when 25 year old Abbie got in touch to ask whether I’d heard that she’d opened up in February after the previous cafe was closed (just before Xmas with all staff losing their jobs 😫), I knew I had to pop along.
Bea and I were greeted on arrival by Bill, an 85 year old volunteer at the cafe. He’s chief door opener, helps with clearing up and is generally an all round lovely gent who is happy to have a chat if you fancy but equally leaves you be when you want to stuff your face! He told me proudly how volunteering keeps him active and gives him purpose & good conversation 💙 Abbie had offered to pay him but he’s refused, he did however accept the fabulous T-shirt she has provided 👕
The menu is small whilst the cafe gets off the ground but I loved that the bagels were from my fave (Bagelry Box) and sweet treats from one of my other faves, Cakesmiths 😋 I still don’t like coffee (I swear one day I’ll grow up…) but theirs is from Extract Coffee Roasters which is not only local but apparently one of the best ☕️
Bea and I spent a lovely afternoon in the bright, airy (and cool 🙌🏻) cafe. It has a make shift art gallery out the ‘back’ with local pieces available to purchase, and even its own kids area where Bea spent a long time in lovingly creating her own ‘Rooted’ sign. For smaller ones there’s a fledgling Mum & Babies morning 👶🏻 and fellow bargain hunters will love the loyalty card (10th cup free & double stamps on Tues & Weds!). Dogs are welcome and they’re also looking to put on events such as opening mic evenings occasionally 🎶
What impressed me most though is Abbie’s gumption. (One of my favourite words & completely appropriate in this instance 💪) Faced with losing her job she decided to take her destiny into her own hands. She's sourced brilliant suppliers (with support from locals keen to help her succeed!), transforming the space and building a community around it. The world needs more people like her 🫶
So save this for the next time you’re looking for a cafe to visit 🗳️ (it’s only 12 mins from Bristol and close to Backwell Lake, Goblin Combe, Cadbury Hill & more) and don’t forget to follow me for more great places to discover and dine with your family 👣
