Hellooooo!!!! ❤️

I truly believe there are moments in life that deserve to be celebrated… and this is definitely one of them.

I’ve always admired Gabriel from Casa Azul — not only for everything he has achieved in hospitality, but for the incredible human being he is. And that heart of his… ❤️

During the pandemic, he helped so many people that they even put his face on one of the Brighton buses! Honestly, I see him everywhere. 😂

Casa Azul is so much more than a restaurant. It’s a family, a team, a place built around generosity, love and the simple belief of always giving your best.

And for me, this collaboration is more than just cooking together. It’s a pleasure. It’s gratitude. It’s friendship.

It will be an absolute honour to share the kitchen with you, Gabriel — to cook, laugh, have fun and celebrate what we love doing.

I’ll never forget one particular day…

I was painting the house that is now Kusikuy. I was exhausted, covered in paint and absolutely starving. Gabriel arrived with that unmistakable smile of his to see how things were going.

And then, out of nowhere, he pulled out some tacos he had made for me.

(I must have looked REALLY hungry 😂)

That day, you didn’t just fill my stomach, brother.

You filled my heart.

I hope I never get Alzheimer’s and forget that moment. ❤️

Perhaps if we were all a little more generous, a little more willing to lend a hand and help each other, this world would be a more joyful and less selfish place.

So here’s to our first collaboration, our first party together, and to good food, good people and genuine friendship.

In the daily rush of walking back and forth through Kemptown Seymour, I would often see you laughing, with music playing. And truth be told, music is the only thing we really have left. Its rhythm is so simple and so essential, like the beating of a heart—like when we are children, listening to our mother’s heartbeat and beating alongside her, two hearts as one. Or like when you become a father and look at your daughter, feeling that she is nothing less than “your very breath.”You were always willing to talk to anyone. Who, these days, really wants to have a face-to-face conversation? Who, these days, communicates through anything other than a phone or a screen? Yet there you were, talking and talking about a world beyond the one everyone else understood. You saw things that perhaps the rest of us will never see. And Charles, that’s what I miss.Even though we all walk around absorbed in our own little worlds, whenever we saw you—at least I did—you were like an open window in a house during springtime. Like a rare animal simply being happy. Like a light beyond the light, as you once told me.
We only spoke three times.
The first time, you told me you liked the song that was playing. You were dressed all in black. Since I knew nothing about reggae, that conversation became the beginning of my understanding of you.

The second time, you were dressed completely in yellow. We talked about the food you missed the most and the meals our mothers used to cook. I told you about Peru, and you didn’t even know where it was. “Maybe one day I’ll go,” you said.

The last time, you were wearing camouflage.

“Getting ready for war?” I joked.

“There’s always another war,” you replied.

At the time, I didn’t understand what you meant when you said that we all fight millions of wars within ourselves.

Today—only today—Samuel told me that you were gone, struck down by a heart attack.

What an irony, isn’t it? That someone like you could leave so suddenly. Maybe you had already accomplished everything you came here to do . Or perhaps you simply grew tired of being among us. Or maybe you just went looking for more reggae somewhere else… or perhaps a new outfit. We will miss youcharles

“A house is discovered in many ways. Every corner holds a story — every stone, every wall, every window, every space carries memory.

This house once belonged to Martha Gunn, known as ‘The Queen of the Bathers,’ when Brighton — the city that now welcomes us — began to grow as a seaside resort in the late 18th century.

With love and respect, we are proud to share that Kusikuy now has a home here. A home for everyone — a place to celebrate life, to share food as couples, as families, with friends, with people worth remembering. You will give this house new memories, and perhaps in doing so, we will honor the memory of Martha Gunn.

When I chose the name ‘Kusikuy,’ it was because it means ‘the joy of sharing.’ So let’s eat, toast, and love together.

‘The Old Corner House’ returns — now as a Peruvian home.
