POV: you find an old video from when you first started your cake business and suddenly realise the lighting makes it look like it was filmed in 1999 😂

I’m pretty sure this was actually 2022…

Back when Daisy Mud Pie was being built from my little flat, taking on corporate orders and figuring everything out as I went.

The equipment wasn’t fancy. The videos definitely weren’t 😂 But it was the beginning.

And I think we all have to start somewhere.

So here’s your reminder that the version of your business you have today probably wouldn’t exist without all those slightly chaotic, very unglamorous beginnings.

10 minutes procrastinating before I actually started decorating… 😂

Then suddenly I’m completely absorbed in piping with a 1M tip like I have nowhere else to be.

I’m not always a patient person… but apparently give me a cake and a piping bag and I’ll find all the patience in the world. 😂🎂

400 cupcakes. 🧁

At the beginning: “This will be fine.”
Somewhere around cupcake number 173: “Why did I agree to this?”
Cupcake number 327: “I could have been doing literally anything else.” 😂

And then, somehow, the last one gets piped and I’m weirdly proud of myself.

If you’ve ever taken on a job that sounded like a great idea at the time… only to question every life decision halfway through, you’ll understand. 😂

A little behind the scenes of building a 6” caramel cake 🤎🎂

Starting with four layers of sponge to create that lovely tall finish, then trimming each layer before filling with silky white chocolate buttercream and generous layers of doce de leite caramel.

Once stacked, it goes into the fridge to firm everything up before the crumb coat — one of those little steps that makes such a difference to the finished cake.

I love how much difference the right piping tip can make! 🤍

For this cake I used:
🎂 1M open star piping tip for those classic shell
🌸 199 French piping tip for the delicate textured details

Finished with personalised rose gold lettering and the prettiest light pink bows 🎀

✨ How it all started…

Before Daisy Mud Pie became the business it is today, there was a lot of practice, a lot of experimenting, and quite a few cakes that probably shouldn’t be shown to the public 😂

I’d previously worked as a head chef, so food and creating had always been a huge part of my life. But somewhere along the way, I discovered that cake decorating was something I genuinely loved.

Then came the moment I realised… I could actually make a living from this.

And what started as something I enjoyed making slowly became something much bigger.

So I thought it was time to go back to the beginning and share the story of how Daisy Mud Pie came to be — the successes, the mistakes, the lessons and everything I’ve learnt along the way.

Because ultimately, it isn’t just about making a cake.

The feeling of making something special to mark someone’s occasion will always be what fuels this business. 🎂❤️
