Little bit of history

Doris Whitcombe retired as the landlady of the Airedale Heifer public house on 8th September 1981. She is standing with her son Frank Jnr. outside and inside the pub in the photographs on the left. taken . Doris was retiring after nearly thirty years as the licensee. The pub, on Bradford Road in Sandbeds, is named after the famous Airedale Heifer cow of the early 1800s, which resided at the nearby East Riddlesden Hall, and is still on record as the heaviest cow in the UK.

Doris was succeeded by Philip and Elaine Matthews (photographed top right, taken on 9th September 1981). The changeover was covered in the Keighley News of 11th September 1981.

Eddie Kelly (writing on the History Society's page in 2022): "Philip and Elaine Matthews succeeded Doris Whitcombe who had been licensee and landlady here since 1952; the first six years alongside husband Frank who passed away aged only 44 in January 1958. Philip and Elaine Mathews were managers of the pub on behalf of then owners Viking Taverns. They left here after almost 18 months during mid February 1983."

In 2021, Keighley and District Local History Society acquired an extensive collection of photograph negatives taken by the Keighley News, from which these black and white photographs are taken. The colour photograph of the pub was taken by Tim Neal in 2021. Researched and collated by Tim Neal.
