So we made it to Dubai.. fair to say it is a bit different from Yorkshire & very hot. I had a swollen foot so day 1 was a bit of a wash out but have a few meet up's lined up today... especially looking forward to meeting Zamzam electronics who are Pakistani influencers with over 50m viewers on their social media accounts and interests ranging from electronics to property.
First impressions of Dubai are all positive. Clean, efficient, alive with energy. Similar to my experience from the Middle East I used to know in Riyadh, Kuwait & Doha. But Dubai is definately more intense.
Dubai has always been a bit of a oddity for me in the sense that it has no discernable commodity to sell, it is not a manufacturing hub but what it has managed to sell tho is a dream, glitz and glamour. It is like Las Vegas, it has no real right to exist or thrive but it defies expectations because it pulls folks in with it's allure of bright lights and shiny things. It really is a spectacle.
Dubai has certainly used it location to good effect. It sits near Asia and this is where most of its workforce is sourced from. Dubai and the Gulf in general is a magnet for Asian labour, its the main reason the Gulf functions. Dubai also sits strategically between Asia and Africa which is why it is a logistics hub for trade. Dubai has also modelled itself as a financial capital akin to London, Franfort NY etc hence all the accountancy & finance brothers who continue to flock here.
Much of the countries GDP is also underpinned by property. You cannot escape property in Dubai. Real Estate tremors are felt very acutely in Dubai. But its cosmoplitan nature is its strongest point but unlike Saudi and Qatar Dubai has more freedoms for ownership and entrepreneurship - hence the boom in FDI from Asia over the last few deacdes.
It is still one of the world's most visited cities and a great testament to Dubais leadership under Sheikh Makhtoum.
