Product spotlight: Supernature Lemon Infused Oil

We stock Supernature’s Lemon Infused Oil at The Village Café, made locally at Carrington Barns Farm, only a few miles from Rosewell.

It’s bright, fresh and useful for summer salads, potatoes, greens, dipping and drizzling.

Recipe idea: lemon, pea and herb potato salad

Boil new potatoes until tender, then leave them to cool slightly. Stir through peas, sliced spring onions, chopped parsley and mint.

For the dressing, mix Supernature Lemon Infused Oil with a little lemon juice or vinegar, a spoonful of wholegrain mustard, salt and black pepper. Pour over the potatoes while they’re still slightly warm so they soak up the flavour.

Serve warm or cold.

Next week’s specials board is looking pancake-shaped.

We’ve got a mix of sweet and savoury options, from banana, maple syrup and whipped cream to bacon and maple syrup.

There’s also an Eggs Benedict-style pancake special, plus vanilla ice cream with Nutella sauce for anyone leaning towards dessert.

A quick Earl Grey syrup made with Shibui Earl Grey from Loanhead. Serve it over pancakes, porridge, fresh fruit or ice cream, or stir it into sparkling water with ice and lemon.

Free Summer Soft Play Hour at The Steading

We know the school holidays can get expensive, so this summer we’re offering our first soft play session of the day for free.

From Saturday 27 June to Wednesday 12 August, families can use our soft play area for free from 9.15am to 10.15am.

No booking needed. Just turn up on the day.

Spaces are limited to 6 children under 5 at any one time, so entry will be first come, first served.

June has finally brought us some summer weather, so ice cream is definitely on the menu.

We serve Over Langshaw Farmhouse ice cream, made on their farm in the Scottish Borders using their own fresh milk, cream and eggs - a great example of a local Scottish producer.

Product spotlight: Shibui Earl Grey

All of the tea we serve at The Village Café comes from Shibui Tea, based nearby in Loanhead.

Their Earl Grey is one of the classics on our shelf. It’s made with Ceylon and Assam black teas, flavoured with bergamot - the citrus ingredient that gives Earl Grey its recognisable scent and taste.

Bergamot is often described as somewhere between orange, lemon and floral bitterness, which is why Earl Grey feels lighter and more fragrant than a standard breakfast tea, even though it’s still a black tea.

We serve Shibui tea in the café, and we also keep a selection available to buy from the shelf.
