“I tried Bolton’s chippy of the year and it didn’t disappoint.”

Few dishes are more British than fish and chips. Wrapped in paper and doused with salt and vinegar, it’s a meal that has stood the test of time.
So, when Reel Fish and Chips was crowned The Bolton News Chippy of the Year for the second year running, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. The family-run business, which first opened its doors in 1998, has built a loyal following over the years and continues to grow.
I was greeted by Saima Suleman, who has worked at the Deane Road shop for just over two years. The shop was clean and welcoming, and the handy on-street parking made it easy to pop in. I kept things simple with a portion of cod and chips. The first thing that struck me was the size, which looked more than enough.
Salt and vinegar are a must for me, although I’ll happily leave the mushy peas to someone else. The batter was light and crisp without overpowering the fish, which was perfectly flaky and cooked through. I’m not a fan of thick batter masquerading as the main event, so this was exactly how I like it.
The chips were just as impressive, with just the right balance between crisp edges and fluffy centres. I polished off the fish with ease and, despite feeling full, found myself continuing to pick at the chips long afterwards.
Good chippies aren’t built on batter alone, and Reel had the feel of a genuine community business.
Friendly faces came and went throughout my visit, stopping for a chat as much as they were collecting their tea. One regular spoke warmly about the support he had received from the business during difficult financial times.
It’s easy to see why Reel Fish and Chips has become such a favourite with Bolton residents and our readers. Earlier this year, the business expanded with the opening of its third outlet on Blackburn Road, joining its existing shops on Deane Road and Lees Road in Oldham.
Overall, I’d definitely recommend. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
