Land of Oak & Iron

Land of Oak & Iron Land of Oak & Iron is a welcoming community Heritage Centre, café & events space in Winlaton Mill, set in the beautiful Derwent Valley.

Run by the charity Groundwork North East & Cumbria, all profits support local community & environmental projects. Bursting with acres of beautiful natural woodland, rich in wildlife, and lots of industrial and cultural heritage to celebrate, the Land of Oak & Iron has so many interesting historical places to discover. With countryside to explore by bike, foot or horse, you can follow the River Derwent from the Derwent Reservoir to the River Tyne. Come and rediscover, or find out for the first time, what makes the easily accessible Derwent Valley the perfect destination for a visit. We have the last few spaces on our Silk Painting Workshop available!

Join artist Suna to create either a fan or a sun-catcher with your own beautiful, handmade silk painted artwork. You will explore and learn traditional silk painting techniques using either freehand with your own design or choose from templates provided by Suna.

This lovely creative workshop is £35 and includes all materials and a cuppa from our cafe!

Our first session booked up so fast - so we have a second session of our Children's Christmas Printing Workshop available now!

In this event, children will get to make their own prints, either as an art piece or a Christmas card. Things will get messy, so we recommend sacrificing some old clothes or bringing an apron along.

Tickets are £10 and includes all materials. Each ticket allows 1 child to take part and 1 accompanying adult to assist/supervise.

We have the Green Doctors from Groundwork NE & Cumbria coming to Land of Oak & Iron!

Their mission is to help people in the North East & Cumbria make their home more energy efficient, saving them money, reducing any fuel debt and keep their houses warm - this is especially important as we head into the colder seasons.

So if you have any concerns about your winter fuel and keeping your home warm, they are an excellent free resource to use.

Visit the Heritage Centre on the 9th October between 9:30am - 2:30pm to say hello and ask any questions you may have.

We have Dr Bike returning to the Heritage Centre tomorrow!

They will be able to do small repairs, basic maintenance and safety checks for free to make sure cycling stays accessible and affordable for everyone.

The Dr Bike team will be here from 11am - 3pm, so make sure to put us on your route tomorrow.

Some beautiful close ups of our new exhibition with Imogen of Dusty Souls Art!

This solo exhibition showcases a selection of Imogen's larger artworks, some hand detailed with gold and copper coloured foils that look particularly remarkable in the autumn sunlight.

All artworks on display at the Heritage Centre are available to purchase, and include certificates of authenticity to make sure you know you have a Dusty Souls Art original.

The exhibition will run until 1st November - make sure to come down and see it on display in the Inside Out Gallery viewed from the Courtyard.

Thank you for coming along to our Heritage Open Days events as The Land of Oak & Iron Story! We loved sharing our plans and ideas, and getting new suggestions and stories from you all.

If you've ever been here on a Sunday - you may have heard some lovely tunes drifting across the courtyard from our activity room...

That’ll be our Intermediate Ukulele Sessions in the Map Room with musician tutor Philip!

They're great sessions for anyone who's had a little go at playing the ukulele and wants to learn more in a friendly group.

And if it’s been a while since you picked up a uke — or you’ve learnt the basics and want to progress — why not join us? The ukulele is a wonderfully accessible instrument, and Philip will help you along the way.

They run Sunday mornings every fortnightly and the next session is this Sunday, don't worry if you don't have your own uke', we can provide one (just let us know on the booking page).

Our next Meet the Maker is coming to the Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre shop from Friday ... introducing Isabel of Bella Anima Studio!

Bella Anima Studio create amazing candles and wax melts, made intentionally for deep relaxation. With ethically-sourced ingredients, a commitment to sustainable production and zero compromise on luxury, there's no part of their product that won't make you feel good. They're also based locally in Rowlands Gill!

Bella Anima's products will be available at our Heritage Centre shop from Friday for just 2 weeks leading up to her pop-up stall on 10th October, when they will be sold in person!
