How can we call ourselves a future Town of Culture when so many of the people creating Blackpool’s culture can’t afford to survive?

Independent cafés, artists, musicians, makers, galleries and small businesses are the ones giving this town its personality. Yet many are one bad month away from closing, or are having to find second jobs just to keep going.

Culture isn’t just festivals, headlines and funding bids. It’s the people opening their doors every morning, putting on events, creating spaces, making art and taking risks because they believe Blackpool deserves better.

If local people can’t afford to experience culture, and the people creating it can’t afford to stay here, then who is our culture really for?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t be ambitious. I’m saying we should build a town where culture is sustainable first—one that supports its independents every day, not just when it’s time to sell a vision.

We made a Homes Under The Hammer parody to announce that we’ve turned our storage cupboard into a communal art studio.

A sentence that somehow gets more normal the longer you run a coffee shop.

The room is fully stocked and open to anyone looking for somewhere to draw, paint, write, study, work remotely, practice music, play board games or finally start that project you’ve been talking about since 2022.
