🐦🫐It's that wonderful time of year when the hedgerows are beginning to bow under the weight of ripening fruit, some berries still bright and red, others turning that deep, almost purple-black that tells you they’re ready. The birds have definitely noticed!
Blackbirds, thrushes, robins and other garden visitors will happily work their way along the brambles, picking off the ripest berries. You might spot them disappearing into the hedge, emerging with a little purple stain around the beak, or hear the rustle of leaves as they forage among the branches.
Blackberries are a useful late-summer food source for wildlife, providing a welcome burst of energy as the season starts to turn. For us, they’re a reminder to slow down and notice what’s happening in the hedgerows: the changing colours, the abundance of fruit, and the constant activity of birds making the most of it.
So if you’re out walking this week, keep an eye on the brambles. Pick a few berries if you fancy, but leave some behind. The birds will be grateful! 🐦🫐
