The Double Six

The Double Six A place for socialisers and competitors, masters and novices, for settling in or just passing through.

Where game nights feel grown up but youngsters are always welcome. A place to kick back and relax, to wine or to dine, to win or to lose.

We’re sorry to announce that we’re closing The Double Six café with immediate effect.

Three years ago, we had a dream of setting up a funky independent board game café in a part of Birmingham we’re all very fond of. Making that a reality is something we remain incredibly proud of.

Once the doors were opened, our amazing staff brought the place to life with their energy, commitment and sheer enthusiasm for all things games-related. Customers brought their smiles and laughter, whether enjoying a casual game of Uno or Catan or settling in for a five-hour D&D marathon.

We’re going to miss all of that enormously.

Ultimately, the challenge of establishing a new hospitality business in difficult economic conditions that only ever got tougher and tougher proved too much. As a group of staff and directors, we threw everything at this; time, effort, money and new ideas. Sadly, there comes a point when you have to draw a line in the sand and say, enough is enough. We’ve now reached that point.

Being part of the local independent hospitality scene has been a privilege. Understanding how hard it is to earn every pound of profit has left us in awe of those who have been able to do it successfully and sustainably.

Now more than ever, we urge people to support their local independents. With every one that disappears, the prospect of an uninspiring, homogenised high street becomes more of a reality. We desperately wanted to be part of pushing back against that, providing an experience that was just a little bit different. We’re sorry we couldn’t make it stick.

To everyone who supported us, and to all our incredible staff, thank you so, so much. We rolled the dice and sadly lost – but we had a blast.

Cheers,

Simon, Paul and James

The giveaway has ended and we’ve had some very interesting NPC ideas with in-depth backstories, that our DM’s are itching to sink their teeth into.

So the moment of truth has arisen and our Dungeon Masters have spoken. Our winner for the filled dice is with their NPC Lady Seris Vellamar! The runner up winning the mystery D6 pack is with their Orc Barbarian Warrior!
Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to everyone, for taking part. We will be getting in touch soon to arrange postage details for the dice.

This week’s Social Gaming took place beneath the cool breeze of the air conditioning, but that didn’t make things any less heated!

We kicked things off with the competitive, Monopoly-like The Business Game, where players trade silver in a race to earn a million.

We followed that, ironically, with Cash ‘n’ Guns, a game all about splitting stolen loot and… well, guns!

Next came Planet Unknown, a game that was new, even to us, challenging players to colonise a distant planet while carefully developing their world.

And finally, no Social Gaming Tuesday would be complete without Leo’s favourite game, Coup, a quick-fire game, where governments are built on money, pressure, and good old-fashioned lies.

Join us for social gaming, every week on Tuesdays here at the Double Six!

Farmers' market time again already? Get your sausages, baked goods, fruit and veg and who knows what else, and then take the weight off your feet with a visit to the Double Six, a bite to eat or just a cool drink. Plenty of options for the kids as well. We're on St Mary's Row - a literal stone's throw from the market.

This week, Social Gaming featured ‘Magic maze’, a game about heroes scrambling to steal supplies for their next adventure, and Ponzi Scheme, where players took on the role of scammers trying to lure investors into increasingly questionable ‘opportunities’.

There was definitely a criminal theme running through this one, but if that isn’t your style, don’t worry! We have a wide range of other games available, or feel free to bring your own along to shake things up!

Social Gaming is on every Tuesday, 5:30pm onwards, only £5 a ticket for the whole night!
