Ten years ago, when I first began offering voluntary barista training inside a women's prison in Greece, I carried a quiet dream in my heart — that one day this work would grow beyond the prison walls and open new doors for people who needed a second chance. A place where dignity, skill-building, and real opportunity could come together.

Today, I’m grateful to see that dream coming to life.

I recently had the privilege of helping train the team at On The Way Coffee Athens, a beautiful new social enterprise created by Kath’ Odon. This café exists to offer meaningful work, hands-on experience, and hope to people from disadvantaged backgrounds — supporting them as they rebuild their lives.

Below is more about the inspiring work of Kath’ Odon, the organisation behind this new café:

Kath’ Odon is a Christian, non-profit organization whose heart is love, respect, and an open embrace for every person experiencing homelessness.

Their first actions among the homeless in the centre of Athens began in autumn 2018. The small care package offered to people on the street was never meant to “save” them — but to remind them that they are not alone.

By mapping the services and organizations already working with homeless individuals, they identified what was missing and stepped in to offer it.

Today, Kath’ Odon — in addition to the care packages it distributes every Thursday in central Athens — helps people organise their public documents, offers breakfast during the week, supports reintegration into society by providing housing for up to four individuals for a year in its two social homes, and offers psychological support from a professional psychologist. Together, they also explore employment opportunities and plan the next steps forward.

Kath’ Odon’s most recent addition is a second-hand shop in the Metaxourgeio area, where donations and purchases help combat homelessness in Athens.

And now, after ten years of dreaming and preparation, Kath’ Odon is launching its new project: On The Way Coffee Athens.
This social enterprise will create job opportunities for people from all disadvantaged backgrounds — offering meaningful work, real experience, and the ability to support themselves with dignity. It is a vision coming to life to help more people rebuild their lives and start again.

Πριν από δέκα χρόνια, όταν ξεκίνησα να προσφέρω εθελοντικά εκπαίδευση barista σε γυναικείες φυλακές στην Ελλάδα, είχα μέσα μου ένα ήσυχο όνειρο — ότι κάποια μέρα αυτή η δράση θα μεγάλωνε πέρα από τα τείχη της φυλακής και θα άνοιγε νέους δρόμους για ανθρώπους που χρειάζονται μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία. Έναν χώρο όπου η αξιοπρέπεια, η εκπαίδευση και η πραγματική ευκαιρία θα ενώνονταν.

Σήμερα, είμαι ευγνώμων που βλέπω αυτό το όνειρο να παίρνει ζωή.

Πρόσφατα είχα την τιμή να βοηθήσω στην εκπαίδευση της ομάδας στο On The Way Coffee Athens, μια υπέροχη κοινωνική επιχείρηση που δημιούργησε το Καθ’ Οδόν. Αυτό το καφέ έχει σκοπό να προσφέρει ουσιαστική εργασία, πρακτική εμπειρία και ελπίδα σε ανθρώπους από ευάλωτες ή μειονεκτικές συνθήκες — στηρίζοντάς τους καθώς ξαναχτίζουν τη ζωή τους.

Το Καθ’ Οδόν είναι ένας Χριστιανικός, μη κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός που έχει στο κέντρο του την αγάπη, τον σεβασμό και μια ανοιχτή αγκαλιά για κάθε άνθρωπο που βρίσκεται σε κατάσταση αστεγίας.

Οι πρώτες δράσεις του ανάμεσα στους αστέγους στο κέντρο της Αθήνας ξεκίνησαν το Φθινόπωρο του 2018. Το μικρό πακέτο φροντίδας που προσέφεραν στους ανθρώπους που συναντούσαν στον δρόμο δεν είχε σκοπό να τους «σώσει», αλλά να τους θυμίσει ότι δεν είναι μόνοι.

Με την καταγραφή των υπηρεσιών και των οργανισμών που ήδη δραστηριοποιούνται για τους άστεγους, εντόπισαν τι έλειπε και φρόντισαν να το προσφέρουν.

Σήμερα, το Καθ’ Οδόν — πέρα από το πακέτο φροντίδας που μοιράζει κάθε Πέμπτη στο κέντρο της Αθήνας — βοηθάει τους ανθρώπους να τακτοποιήσουν τα δημόσια έγγραφά τους, τους προσφέρει πρωινό μέσα στην εβδομάδα, και τους στηρίζει στην επανένταξή τους στην κοινωνία, προσφέροντας στέγη για έναν χρόνο σε έως τέσσερα άτομα στις δύο κοινωνικές κατοικίες που διαθέτει. Παρέχει επίσης ψυχολογική υποστήριξη από επαγγελματία ψυχολόγο και μαζί εξετάζουν τη δυνατότητα εύρεσης εργασίας και τα επόμενα βήματα.

Η πιο πρόσφατη προσθήκη στο Καθ’ Οδόν είναι ένα κατάστημα με μεταχειρισμένα είδη στην περιοχή του Μεταξουργείου, όπου με τις δωρεές και τις αγορές σας συμβάλλετε κι εσείς στην καταπολέμηση της αστεγίας στην Αθήνα.

Και τώρα, μετά από δέκα χρόνια οραματισμού και προετοιμασίας, το Καθ’ Οδόν ξεκινά το νέο του εγχείρημα: το On The Way Coffee Athens.
Πρόκειται για μια κοινωνική επιχείρηση που θα δημιουργήσει ευκαιρίες εργασίας για ανθρώπους από κάθε είδους ευάλωτες ή μειονεκτικές ομάδες — προσφέροντάς τους ουσιαστική εργασία, πραγματική εμπειρία και τη δυνατότητα να καλύπτουν τις ανάγκες τους με αξιοπρέπεια. Ένα όραμα που παίρνει σάρκα και οστά, βοηθώντας ακόμη περισσότερους ανθρώπους να ξαναχτίσουν τη ζωή τους και να κάνουν μια νέα αρχή.

On the way to visit the brand new On The Way Coffee Athens to deliver training and wish them the very best in person! These are very dear friends of mine. I have watched them create something amazing in Athens for the homeless and disadvantaged community there, and I know this cafe will make a huge difference. So proud of their perseverance and dedication, it has been hard getting to this point.

My story

I was born in Cyprus and raised in Larnaca, a tourist hot spot. It seemed natural to me to follow a career in the hospitality industry, studing hotel and restaurant management while working evenings in restarants, bars and night clubs. Over the last 30 years or so, I have worked in Cyprus, England and Greece in restaurants, hotels, bars, nightclubs, cafes and even fish and chip shops!

More recently, in 2005, my wife and I run our own traditional tea room with a twist, in Wirral, North West of England. Seven years and many awards later, we sold up and I followed my passion for coffee by specialising as a coffee barista trainer with the Speciality Coffee Association. So, since 2012, I have worked as an independent coffee barista trainer.

In 2015, while on a temporary stay in Greece, the opportunity to start a not for profit coffee school in a prison, presented itself and long story short, three year later, I have set up three such projects. One in a womens prison, one in a community centre and one for a project that rescues traficked women. I combine my not for profit work with my business and work around my family. My three children are home educated (unschooled) and my wife is developing a career as a coach and author so this means we are always on the go, learning, exploring and making a difference to our communities.

Right now my vision is to start a social franchise using complete mobile cafes to not only train people from disadvantaged backgrounds but also set them up in business. If you want to know more, you know where to find me :)
