Five things you probably didn't know about... Filter coffee
1. Filter coffee uses a paper filter to separate the coffee grounds from the brewed beverage, resulting in a clean cup with minimal sediment. This brewing method also allows for more control over the coffee's flavor profile, making it versatile for different roast profiles and coffee origins.
2. Lower acidity & higher strength: Compared to espresso, filter coffee tends to have lower acidity. This is because the brewing process doesn't involve high pressure or boiling water, which can extract more acidic compounds from the coffee beans. Extraction also occurs over a longer time wen brewing filter, resulting in much higher caffeine levels than espresso - a common misconception!
3. Wide variety of brewing methods: There are many ways to brew filter coffee, each with its own unique characteristics. Our favourite methods include Hario V60, Kalita, filter machines like the Moccamaster, the AeroPress, and the Chemex.
Β 4. Environmentally friendly: Many filter coffee brewing methods are considered eco-friendly. Compostable filters help reduce waste, and the brewing process itself typically uses less energy than espresso machines.
Β 5. Health benefits: Filter coffee is a good source of antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients. Studies have suggested that moderate coffee consumption can offer various health benefits, including reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.
