The first friday of June is National fish and chip day!!!!!! 🐟 🍟

Nomm nomm nomm.........

First introduced in 1860 in east London it has become a tasty traditional treat for us.

During D-Day operations it was used for code by soldiers to identify each in the field. Someone would shout fish and the response would be chips, like marco polo!

It was also one of the foods that wasnt rationed by Winston Churchill to keep up morale. Some chips shops do special offers to commemorate the day!

So keep up tradition and go and get yourself a fish supper tonight! 😃😋

This week we visited The Chippy, Bridewell Street, Carrickfergus.

Order was placed online. The bill was £20.47p. A collection time was picked and off we went to collect. The chippy itself is in amongst a housing estate, handy dander to get your chippy tea for them. 😄
The chippy is takeout only with plenty of parking outside.

We arrived to collect and the food was already bagged up and ready to go. We drove to the castle, parked up and cracked open the bag.

Fish was warm, not the freshest but it was a decent size for the price. The batter was a bit greasy.

Burger had a floury bap, cheese 🧀 (as requested), thousand island, lettuce 🥬, tomato 🍅 and Onions 🌰. Lots of chunky onions! The patty was weighty and a bit juicy. A basic burger for a decent price.

Gravy chips were really chips, a few that still had their eyes 👁 🥔 but they were mostly quite nice. The gravy was nice. The consistency was a bit watery than preferred but it was a nice taste.

Curry chips were nice. Chips were nice and the curry was a bit spicy but a little bit runny. The texture could have been a bit thicker for it to stay on the chips better.

Service was mostly good. When ordering the burger the list of ingredients did not mention the onions so we didnt put on the special instructions no onions as usual. It should be on the list of items on the menu of the burger or was it our mistake for both requesting onions? 🤷🏼‍♀️ The food was ready on time and staff were pleasent.

Not a bad experience at all. We will be sure to mention no onions in future on all orders to be on the safe side. The food was ready on time and a decent price.

This week was a visit to a newly acquired chippy in Downpatrick. Ralphs Fish & Chips (formally Docs), The Grove Shopping Centre, Market Street, Downpatrick, Downpatrick.

Ralphs is sit in and take away chippy, although there is no toilet.

We ordered online via the app and got a collection time. We arrived on time and the food was just bagged and ready.

Fish was hot and a good portion size. The batter was very greasy. When the fish was flipped over in half to get the photo inside the grease was dripping from it. There was a few bits crispy.

Burger was was a 4oz patty with a soft bap, pineapple 🍍 ring, lettuce, tomato 🍅 and sauce. There could have been more sauce, it would made the burger much nicer. The lettuce was quite pale looking but tasty. Pattys were 2 x2oz. Meaty and juicy. There was no cheese on the burger even though we paid extra for it.

Gravy chip was really nice. Chips were soft just the way I like them. 😋 The gravy was nice. Tasty and a good texture.

Curry chip was nice. Chips were a bit chewy in places but mostly decent. The sauce had a bit of spice to it.

Service was decent. I was in and out quickly as the food was ready on time. Staff were pleasent and the chippy was tidy.

This week we visited The Chipped Potato, Knockmore Square, Lisburn.

Well........ we ordered over the app iwantfed and picked a collection time. The chippy opened in 2014 is takeout only with a cool rustic decor. The bill was £22.60. We would have paid more and have done for food that did not match the standard! Wheelchair accessible with benchs for waiting.

Fish was so good! It was hot, fresh and crispy. I like the fish boxed 📦. I always find them less greasy and sweaty when they have a bit of greaseproof paper in a box. Every bite was nicer than the last! This is definitely the nicest to date! 😋😋🤤🤤

The big was a big un. 8oz of tasty moist beef. A kiss of lettuce, pineapple ring 🍍, tomato 🍅, sauce and cheese 🧀. The video does not do it credit!

Gravy chips 🍟 were absolutely great! Lovely Chipped Potato, (see what I did there?!)😅 The gravy was a chicken gravy that tasted like the chicken shop gravy. (Herons). A bit of spice to it but not hot. A really nice texture that stayed on the chippies after dippies.

Curry chips 🍟 were chunky firm and fluffy. A mix of chips that every bite was joyful. The curry was spicy and a nice thick consistency.

Service was really good and the chippy was busy. Everything packed great and salt and vinegar could be seen and tasted. Staff were friendly and order was on time and all correct.

Overall i dont know if we can find somewhere that will top that meal! We left with full happy belly's! After a few dodgy visits this was an absolute treat! Highly recommend a visit to the Chipped Potato 🥔!

This week was a sequel to Carnlough! We visited The Galley, Harbour Road, Carnlough.

This chippy sits just a 3 minute walk from last week's location.

We ordered over the phone and drove to collect. It is a takeaway only with 2 benchs to wait. It was very busy inside and people waiting outside. The bill was £22.60 and the shop is wheelchair accessible. They also do a cheeky battered Mars bar! 🍫

Fish was nice. It was well done but not over done. If you know what I mean! Some of it was much crunchier than other bits. The fish itself was really nice. It was quite fresh.

Burger was not great. It was a floury dry and tough bap, a 4oz patty which was as dry as flip flop, pineapple ring , a slice of tomato 🍅 and thousand island dressing. The burger itself was much like last week's with the exception of the sauce alternative. Disappointing as the place was so busy both weeks.

Gravy chips were not my taste. The sauce was not the flavour I expected when I dunked. It was just bleh and very watery.

Curry chips were over cooked, maybe cooked twice, as in reheated. They were not as nice last week's. The curry was a pleasent flavour. Not spicy and very watery.

Service was decent considering it was so busy. Staff were pleasent and the order took about 25 minutes or so but we weren't given a time slot.

Between the two burgers are not the speciality. The fish was good in Galley but the chips and sauces Marine served were awesome.

This week we had visited the beautiful scenic town of Carnlough. We ordered from Marine takeout, Marine Road, Carnlough.

The town was really busy! We ordered over the phone and given a 15minute collection time. We were stuck in alot of traffic but made it in on time. The chippy itself is very old looking and dark inside. Wheelchair accessible and takeaway only. The total cost for the usual order was £20.

Fish was a bit tasteless at the start of it and greasy at the other end. A decent sized fish and the batter was reasonably nice.

Burger was a floury toasted bap which was abit tough, pineapple 🍍, mayo, lettuce and tomato 🍅. The patty was quite thin and dry.

Gravy chip 🍟 was pretty good. The chips themselves were tasty and cooked just in the we both enjoy. The gravy was super tasty. I do like my gravy thick but if they had added anymore into it to thicken it, that might have changed the taste and it was bloody great!

Curry chips 🍟 were a win! Chips were a decent mix of soft but not mushy and a bit of crunch. However, the sauce.........the eyes lit up when the curry was unveiled!!! A sweet fruity curry sauce that was polished off in no time at all!

Service was good. Staff were pleasent, offered salt 🧂 and vinegar which is always a bonus. Order was all present, correct and ready on time. Not the best chippy we have visited, also not the worst. Chips were pretty good and the sauces were great. There was alot of mixed reviews on google which we do look at when searching for a new spot.

This week's visit was to Big John's traditional Fish and chips, Shankill Road, Belfast.
We have been here before but it was previously known as Chipsy King.
The decor and layout is the same as before.

We ordered online 📱 and picked a collection time. We arrived on time and collected. The food was ready promptly. The bill was £22.75 all in.

We parked up and cracked on.

The fish was massive!!! It was like something from moby dick for £7.50! Then I cut into it. It was heavy and thickly coated in flour. It was far too much. The fish was a slightly unpleasant texture and taste. It was tasted and left. I just couldn't bring myself to eat it.

The burger was Big John's big burger with a floury roll lightly toasted, lettuce (which wasn't at its freshest), tomato, pineapple ring, grated cheese 🧀 and mayo. The patty itself was moist and filled the bap.

Gravy chips were not a great taste. The gravy saved the score. It was chickeny and really nice.

Curry chips were an odd taste and chewy. The curry sauce was thick and spicy.

Service was good. Order was correct and ready on time. It wasnt very busy for around 6pm.

Overall the sauces were the best part of the visit. The fish even though it was massive it wasnt nice at all. The burger was a standard burger. There are nicer chippys in the area.
Big johns gives big servings but it isn't always a good thing. A bit disappointing compared to the previous visit to the predecessor which scored an 8.

We bought this to try it on the fish. The bottle is super handy but it definitely does not beat a real jar of tartar sauce. My favourite is Sainsbury's own. It is creamy, a good texture and really tasty. Some are too tangy for my preference. (Available from other stores) 😆
