Coffee is consumed widely across Northern Ireland, especially in Belfast, where this tradition stems back to Harland and Wolff dockyards in the 1800s. Thousands of workers were employed to build grand ships, the most famous being the RMS TITANIC of the White Star Line. Large ships built in the Belfast yard were constructed with sh

eets of steel, held in place by iron rivets. Each rivet was heated red hot and then driven in place by two men wielding hammers on either side of the steel plate. The ‘fire boys’ were responsible for maintaining small coal fires throughout the ship, used to heat the rivets and also preparing coffee. Coffee was prepared several times throughout a shift, that lasted up to 12 hours per day. Raw coffee beans were widely available, having been traded for linen and rope. Belfast was home to the largest rope works in the world and exported to the world's shipping industry. Robert Allan, a Belfast shipwright, blended the coffee with various traded spices to give it a unique flavour. This process is still used today by the 4th generation Allan Family and is what makes our coffee taste so unique. Traditional Belfast coffee is a strong, full-flavoured coffee, which was the order of the day in the 1800s. By maintaining the Belfast coffee tradition and refining our coffee to represent the modern Belfast taste profile, our Belfast coffee is still today, expertly roasted in the shadow of our two yellow gantry cranes ‘Samson’ (804 tonnes) and ‘Goliath’ (760 tonnes) that dominate the Belfast skyline. Enjoy our small batch coffee, roasted with pride in Belfast, from us to you. From coffee vans to subscription services, new coffee start-ups have been thriving during lockdown.

One of these ventures Belfast Coffee Co was started during lockdown by a group of four friends, who have such an incredible story behind their brand.

‘We are showcasing a Belfast family tradition of coffee roasting with a focus on Belfast, Ireland and its people,’ says co-founder Albie Oberholzer.

The brand is focused around the heritage of the Allan family – Robert Allan, a Belfast shipwright who is related to one of the start-up friends Eddie Allan.

In the 1800s Belfast was the fastest growing city in the world with thousands employed to build grand ships and work in the thriving rope industry.

On the ships ‘Fire Boys’ kept the coal fires roaring to heat the rivets and prepare the coffee that would keep everyone awake on the long 12-hour shifts.

Robert Allan blended coffee with spices he traded, and this recipe was the founding recipe for Belfast Coffee brewed by The Belfast Coffee Co.

“We wanted to build on this tradition of strong, full-flavoured coffee,” says Albie, “with good quality beans roasted in 12 kg batches.”

Their product launched in October 2020, and is already stocked by eight retailers in Northern Ireland.

Their main market is subscription and one-off purchases, and so far they’ve sold nearly three tons of coffee, with the US and Australia being keen customers. They have also shipped to Singapore and Cyprus.

Not bad for a start-up which is barely a year old 💪

At UK Coffee Week we love hearing stories like this 👍😀
