Collage group at Tangerine Cafe , every second Monday of the month.

I am looking forward very much to another collage session in the cafe next Monday afternoon.

Collage is fun and relaxing. And even better with some company plus tea/ coffee and biscuits .

This is a regular monthly meeting open to all. Just £3 donation to cover costs and to add a little to my late son Mark’s Just Giving account for Cancer Research UK

Materials provided.

The session is supported by the lovely Dorset START team who help people in the community to get involved in activities to enhance wellbeing and we can all do with that.

Oh and if anyone in the community has useful materials we can use please get in touch. For example good quality magazines with lots of photos or artwork, foil wrappers from chocolate bars, decorative papers, tissue paper, empty small tissue boxes or other small cardboard containers that can be collaged into something useful and decorative.

We are having a Thomas Hardy Supper in our lovejy orangery on Tuesday 2nd June to celebrate the life of one of Dorset’s most famous writers. This is the second year we have done this. I want to create a tradition around Hardy’s birthday.

The evening starts at 6.30 and everyone will sit down together so you can come on your own if you want to. This will be a friendly informal evening for up to 12 people. So book soon to secure a place. Half full already. £35 per person for 3 course rustic Victorian meal and delightful readings from Hardy’s more humorous works.

A Thomas Hardy Supper - Tuesday 2nd June 6.30 pm

For the second year tuning we are celebrating the birthday of one of
Dorset’s most famous writers, Thomas Hardy.

Do come and join us.

The evening will include a rustic Victorian style three course meal and some readings from short stories and poems with a humorous slant. Yes Hardy did have a humorous side!!

The readings will be by Brian Earl and Chris Sims .

Thomas Hardy was born in Stinsford in South West Dorset on June 2nd 1840 and died on January 11th 1928 in Dorchester. Amongst his novels are The Mayor of Casterbridge, Return of the Native and Tess of the d’Urbervilles. His greatest love though was for poetry.

Shortly after Nicola welcomed her second baby to the world, she took part in cervical screening and her results confirmed she had HPV and abnormal cells on her cervix. A later biopsy confirmed she had stage 1 cervical cancer.

"My first thought was, 'I have a six-month-old baby; I can’t die.' I couldn’t take in anything the doctor said, even that it was early and treatable."

Initial treatment didn’t remove all the cancer, and Nicola was advised to have a hysterectomy. She was in her 30s, and it was a huge decision.

“It was life changing, but I didn’t want any risk left behind. I felt lucky to already have two children. I’d rather be here for them."

After she had the operation, tests showed her womb was clear, and she didn’t need further treatment. Now, Nicola wants more women to understand the power of early detection and the importance of the HPV vaccine.

"It’s so important people know that cervical cancer, when caught early, can be successfully treated," she shares. "When I was at school, there wasn’t the HPV vaccine. Now there is, and one of my nieces has already had it."

Research we funded helped prove that almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV, and our researchers also helped to develop a vaccine against the virus.

A 2021 study found that cervical cancer rates were reduced by almost 90% in women in their 20s in England, who were offered the vaccine aged 12-13.
