This beautiful footpath and green corridor running from the bottom of the rec to Almonry Farm is under threat. I walk to work along here most days, and lots of kids from Claverham use it too.
There’s a large housing development being proposed for these fields and it would have a huge impact on Battle. These fields act as a natural soakaway and floodplain, and the hedgerows around them are centuries old. They’re home to badgers, bats, wild birds and hedgehogs.
Mansers Shaw is a really important part of the local ecology – it supports newts, frogs and toads, and provides water for the surrounding woodland, shrubs, flowers and wildlife. Historically these fields were part of the Abbey Estate, and they’re an important buffer that helps protect the character, heritage and history of the town.
Battle’s infrastructure is already under pressure and our high street doesn’t need even more traffic. Once development starts here it will open the door for the surrounding fields to be built on too, and before long it will just become urban sprawl.
If you value this green space and want to object, please act now. There are only a few days left to submit your views.
