⚠️ Abbey Mill is closed today ⚠️

We don’t often close because of a storm, but today we’ve made the decision to put the safety of our staff and customers first.

With severe winds and trees already down locally, we’re especially conscious of the large trees above the café. We feel staying closed is the safest decision.

Sadly, we’ve had to cancel today’s afternoon teas, and we’ve contacted as many of our regular customers as we can to save them a journey.

We’re sorry to disappoint anyone who was planning a visit, and thank you for understanding. Please share this to help us reach anyone who might be heading our way.

Stay safe and look after yourselves ❤️
We’ll see you all on Wednesday from 10am.

🍂 Only eight weeks until the light starts returning! ☀️

We’ve had quite a few conversations in the café lately about the darker evenings and how much everyone dreads November and December.

But here’s a little thought I’ve been sharing with our customers…

When the clocks go back this evening, there’s only eight weeks and one day until the winter solstice on 21st December.

And from then on, the days gradually start getting longer again. 🌅

Doesn’t that make the darker months feel just a little bit shorter?

Of course, we’ve still got plenty of winter ahead of us, but there’s something comforting about knowing that even on the darkest day, the light is about to return.

In the meantime, there’s autumn colour to enjoy, winter walks, cosy cafés, warm drinks and all those little things that make this time of year special. ☕🤎

Are you someone who embraces the darker evenings, or are you already counting down to the return of the light? 🍂

The great teacake debate… you were split exactly 50/50! 🤎

We asked whether you preferred our original cranberry teacakes or the fruit teacakes we’ve been trying, and it was a tie.

So we’ve decided to keep the fruit teacakes for a little while. Cranberry fans, it’s just a little break! 😊

Toasted teacake, your favourite hot drink and a cosy spot by the fire… a lovely way to spend an autumn afternoon at Abbey Mill. 🍂☕

The mysterious ring of Abbey Mill… 💍🕯️

With Halloween approaching, here’s a little mystery of our own. And we’d still love to know the answer…

Soon after we opened the café in 2008, we discovered something hanging on a nail at the back of the café: a small, hand-knitted white pouch with a yellow cross.

Inside was an old ring with a purple stone. It was misshapen and well worn, as though it had been part of someone’s life for a very long time.

We had no idea where it had come from, who it belonged to or why it had been left there.

We asked everyone who came into the café. Nobody could explain it, but people who held it said it had a lovely feeling about it. Two teachers from the college suggested keeping it in our till for good luck… so that’s what we did.

We kept asking and searching. The Mail even ran a little story to help us find some answers. Still, nothing.

For the next ten years, that little ring stayed in our till and became part of Abbey Mill’s story.

Then, almost ten years to the day after we put it there, the café was broken into—and our ring was stolen.

We were so sad to lose it. For a moment, we wondered whether our good luck had gone with it.

But eighteen years after opening, we’re still here. Perhaps a little of that luck stayed with us after all. 🤎

This is a photograph of the ring and its little pouch. Does it stir a memory? Do you remember the newspaper story, or know anything about why it might have been left here?

We’d still love to solve the mystery of Abbey Mill’s little purple ring…

If these old walls could talk… 👻🕯️

With Halloween approaching, we’ve been wondering what stories you’ve heard about Furness Abbey and our little Abbey Mill café.

There’s something about the abbey ruins on an autumn afternoon—the fading light, the wind through the trees and the shadows stretching across the ancient stone. It doesn’t take much imagination to picture someone from centuries past just around the corner… 🍂

Have you heard a local ghost story? Ever spotted something you couldn’t explain, or felt a little shiver while walking past?

We’d love to hear your tales—whether they’re old family stories, local legends or something you experienced yourself. Tell us in the comments… if you dare! 👀

And if you prefer your autumn adventures with a little less mystery, there’s always a warm welcome, a hot coffee and a seat by the fire at Abbey Mill. ☕🔥

There’s something rather magical about Furness Abbey in October. 🍂🤎

The changing colours, the beautiful old stones and those peaceful woodland walks.

We’re incredibly lucky to have all this history right on our doorstep.

And tucked beside the ruins, our little coffee shop has been welcoming visitors for 18 years.

Whether you’re heading out for a long walk or simply fancy a little fresh air, we’ll have the kettle on and the scones freshly baked.

Happy Sunday from Abbey Mill. ☕

What’s your favourite autumn walk around Furness?

17/10/2026

🏛️ Furness Abbey is due to close for winter on the 1 November, when it will be undergoing a major refurbishment of its visitor centre and museum ahead of its 900th anniversary next year.

The Abbey received government funding through the Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) to help support vital repairs, including protection of its important collections.

The works being carried out by English Heritage in the coming months will revamp the visitor centre, improve our local tourism offer, and help preserve our local heritage for many years to come.

Furness Abbey attracts visitors from across the country and plays an important role in our local tourism economy.

Last entry for this year is Sunday 1st November! It's a such a special and beautiful place, I highly recommend a visit.
