𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗖𝗔𝗥 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚:

Marina Village has explained why the former Flagship Centre car park has closed, while confirming that plans for the wider site are continuing to move forward.

A spokesperson told BangorByTheSea that more than £50,000 had been spent preparing the car park for reopening to the public. Unfortunately, usage fell considerably short of expectations.

Even when parking was free, only around 20 to 30 vehicles were using it each day. When charging was introduced in September, that fell even lower.

Meanwhile, the electricity bill alone was approximately £2,000 a month. Some young people were also using the site as a playground, leading to repeated security call-outs and an additional bill of around £7,000. These figures represent just some of the costs involved in keeping the car park open.

With so little income, high running costs and health and safety concerns, it was decided that keeping the car park open was simply not practical. It will now remain closed until the centre itself is ready to open.

The low level of use reflects the site as it stands today, rather than its future potential. The car park currently sits within an emerging development area, but that will change dramatically when Marina Village opens. Its new businesses, attractions and leisure facilities will bring people back to this part of Bangor and create a strong, lasting demand for parking.

The wider Marina Village project is progressing. A planning application has now been submitted, with a decision expected early next year. If everything continues to move forward as planned, work can then begin with the aim of opening Marina Village next summer.

That would bring one of Bangor’s largest vacant sites back into use and create another important destination close to the seafront.

There are encouraging signs across the city. Queen’s Parade is moving forward, while the Marine Court and Royal Hotel sites are also attracting considerable interest. Marina Village will add another major piece to that wider picture.

After many years of waiting, Bangor’s regeneration is becoming increasingly visible. Each project that moves forward gives others greater confidence to invest, and those prepared to move first could find themselves in the strongest position as the city enters its next chapter.

THE BANGOR FESTIVAL YOU MIGHT BE TOO QUICK TO SKIP.

Sometimes the best things happen when we turn up at something we thought was meant for somebody else.

Perhaps that was your experience of the recent Fleadh. You went along for a look, heard something that stopped you in your tracks and found yourself staying longer than planned. A door opened onto a world you hadn’t really considered before.

Bangor’s Aspects Festival deserves that same chance.

“Literary festival” can sound a little daunting. But look through this year’s programme, and there are plenty of ways in through music, humour, local history, creativity and a good story well told.

There’s singer-songwriter Anthony Toner launching a collection of his lyrics. Bangor illustrator Neal McCullough shares the story behind an extraordinary pop-up book. There are creative writing workshops with Nuala McKeever, and Bangor Abbey graveyard tours featuring local poets and musicians. Each offers a different reason to come along.

This year, Bangor becomes a port of poetry as the final stop on the Southbank Centre’s UK-wide “A Poet in Every Port” programme. The National Mobile Poetry Library will visit Ward Park, where a familiar stroll by the duck pond could lead to the discovery of a poem that stays with you forever.

Alongside celebrated writers including John Banville, Jan Carson and David Park, the programme makes room for local voices, outdoor experiences and free events.

The invitation is simple: have a look and choose one thing that catches your curiosity. Bring a friend. Make an afternoon or an evening of it.

A song lyric, a surprising story, a place you see differently afterwards. Sometimes one encounter is enough to make your world a little bigger.

𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗢𝗥’𝗦 𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗔𝗡 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗗𝗢𝗢𝗥 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗬?
The mosaics along Eisenhower Pier offer a glimpse of what this waterfront could become: an outdoor gallery where people come for the views and discover Bangor’s stories, imagination and creative talent.

The original five-panel mural was officially opened on 25 June 2003, following a collaboration between artist Martin McClure, five local schools and North Down Borough Council. Twenty-three years later, their work still gives people a reason to stop and look.

Since then, 278 full months have passed. At a rate of one new artwork a month, that would have been enough to cover all of the estimated 190 upper wall panels across Eisenhower and Pickie piers. It shows how small, regular steps can add up to something remarkable.

Bangor punches well above its weight in its community of artists and makers, so why shouldn’t the Council bring that talent together around an ambitious, properly funded programme?
With paid commissions and community involvement, we could create a beautifully considered walk through Bangor’s maritime heritage, music, wildlife and people.

Against the backdrop of Belfast Lough, this could become somewhere visitors seek out, residents feel proud of, and people photograph and share, giving them another reason to explore our waterfront and spend time in the city.

We already have the setting, the stories and the creative talent. What we need now is a shared commitment to turn those possibilities into a place worth coming to see.

"FLAGSHIP CENTRE CARPARK CLOSED AGAIN?"

The Marina Village car park, formerly the Flagship Centre car park, has been closed for the past few days, leaving some uncertainty about when it will reopen.

It reopened on 1 July, offering free summer parking until 1 September. In its public statement, reported by the County Down Spectator on 11 June, Marina Village Management described the offer as a “gesture of appreciation” for the support shown by local residents and stakeholders.

The reopening was presented as the first stage of the wider redevelopment. The Spectator reported that the developer, Northhold Group, had spent £10,000 clearing drains and repainting parking bays, with Complete Parking Services appointed to operate the facility.

Further improvements were planned, and project director Alistair Smith explained that parking charges would begin once the free period ended. The stated intention was therefore for parking to continue beyond the summer.

We don't yet have details on the closure or a reopening date.

A woman sits tall on a magnificent dark horse, her gaze steady and her journey open to interpretation.
Kate Whiteman’s striking new Bangor mural invites us to pause, look up and consider what moving forward might mean.

In Kate’s own words:
“For me, the horse represents freedom ...a path forward, a way through and a way back to yourself.”

There is a quiet resolve in the rider’s posture. She could be seen as someone reclaiming control of her life and finding the confidence to choose her own path. The horse’s strength and her bare feet suggest an intriguing balance of power and vulnerability. She does not have to be fearless to take the reins.

Everyone passing will bring their own experiences to this image. For some, it might speak of independence. For others, hope, resilience or a fresh beginning.

𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗬 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗧: 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗢𝗥’𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗟
How often do we stop to appreciate the architecture above Bangor’s familiar shopfronts?

At numbers 10 to 16 Quay Street, three distinctive buildings offer a wonderful lesson in looking up. Their contrasting proportions, decorative details and individual rooflines bring character to this historic stretch of the waterfront.

𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬 is the most theatrical of the group. Its rich red frontage rises to twin-shaped gables, with circular windows, ornamental scrollwork and decorative finials creating a striking skyline. Below, two substantial projecting bay windows give the façade depth and rhythm. Even the smaller details reward attention, from the mouldings around the round windows to the patterned decoration beneath the gable edges.

𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝟭𝟮–𝟭𝟰 The pale frontage has neatly framed windows, with horizontal mouldings that give the building a quieter elegance. Its smaller scale makes an attractive companion to its more imposing neighbours. The 1910 directory records Miss Kerr’s Victoria Restaurant at this address, a lovely connection with Bangor’s long tradition of seaside hospitality.

𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟲, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲, brings the confidence of Italianate classical architecture. Built in 1865 for the Belfast Banking Company, it combines rounded ground-floor window arches with elaborate triangular window pediments and miniature balustrades above. Decorative brackets beneath the roofline and the formal entrance complete a frontage designed to convey quality and permanence. Its published history quotes Marcus Patton as describing it as “very sophisticated for the Bangor of its day”.

Together, these buildings give Quay Street something precious: a waterfront with its own unmistakable identity.

🚲 𝗣𝗘𝗗𝗔𝗟𝗦, 𝗦𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞 ☀️

More than 100 riders took part on Saturday as both the school and public Park Pedal rides at Ward Park were booked to capacity, with organisers describing it as possibly their best event yet!

The first ride welcomed 50 cyclists from 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 and 𝗦𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗹’𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 as the chosen Park Pedal Pioneers.
Organisers praised the pupils’ excellent cycling skills, enthusiasm and impeccable manners, describing them as a credit to their schools. 👏

The public ride also reached its capacity of 50 participants, reflecting the enthusiasm for family-friendly cycling opportunities in the area.

Questions about setting up school bike buses have also encouraged Park Pedal’s plans to grow these networks across Northern Ireland. 🌳🚲

Police Ards & North Down joined as support riders, with one young cyclist memorably describing their electric bikes as “catch the criminals” bikes! Even the Ward Park geese earned a thank you for making room for everyone. 🪿😀

Park Pedal CIC thanked the community and programme partners, Ards and North Down Borough Council and Ards and North Down Cycle Campaign, for helping make the events such a success.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗩𝗘. 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗢𝗥’𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬
Across these four images, the dove connects Bangor’s monastic beginnings, Victorian generosity, city status and waterfront renewal. A small bird with a remarkable presence in the story of this place.

That connection reaches back to St Columbanus, whose name means “little dove”. Pictured with the bird resting on his shoulder, he spent years at Bangor Abbey before carrying its tradition of faith and learning into continental Europe. His legacy gave Bangor an international significance that continues to be celebrated today.

Centuries later, the dove found another home in the intricate ironwork of the Coates Memorial drinking fountain, erected in 1895 by Bangor Corinthian Sailing Club in memory of Mrs Arthur Hill Coates.

Look closely beneath its dome. Among the flowers and curling foliage, doves spread their wings above the larger herons displayed in decorative shields. They are easily overlooked, yet form a beautiful part of a memorial that has accompanied generations of Bangor life.

The dove appears again on the "Letters Patent" conferring city status on Bangor. A white dove representing St Columbanus sits within the decorative border, carrying a reminder of Bangor’s ancient heritage into one of its proudest modern milestones.

Now the dove is set to become a defining image of the new waterfront.

The Dove, the centrepiece of Colin Davidson’s ECLIPSE trio, will bring monumental bronze hands and light together to cast a dove-shaped shadow across Marine Gardens. Alongside The Swan at Pickie and The Crab at Eisenhower Pier, it will celebrate Bangor’s identity through an ambitious new work of public art.

Its message of peace, resilience and renewal will have particular resonance as the waterfront opens a new chapter.

With the restored Coates fountain expected to return in the coming months on its new granite plinth, the dove will be present in both a treasured historic landmark and a striking contemporary centrepiece.
Visitors will be able to discover it in the smallest decorative detail and experience it on a spectacular scale.

𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗚𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗦:

For months, the "Save Marine Gardens" campaign has challenged Bangor Marine over paid parking, pollution, mature trees and commercial use of the waterfront.
Its own boulevard proposal now deserves some equally direct questions.

𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻?
The campaign opposes an 81-space paid car park while proposing more than 100 spaces across Queen’s Parade and the West Pavilion area, therefore accepting parking revenue to support the development's viability.
That undermines any suggestion that charging motorists or generating commercial income is inherently objectionable.
The campaign’s own "Boulevard" proposal accepts both.

𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲?
Before claiming the environmental advantage, campaigners should publish which existing mature trees their boulevard would retain and which it would sacrifice.
“Save the trees” cannot meaningfully test Bangor Marine’s proposal if the campaign’s alternative escapes the same examination.

𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?
Parking along Queen’s Parade and beside the West Pavilion would still bring vehicles and manoeuvring close to the new Marine Gardens. Relocating those movements does not establish that their impact would be smaller.
Where is the comparison demonstrating that the boulevard would perform better?

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀
The repeated emphasis on a “125-year lease” risks stirring fear without explaining the arrangement. The council remaining head lessee is compatible with Bangor Marine holding an underlease; neither amounts to a sale of the land. Proper scrutiny concerns the agreement’s terms, restrictions, and safeguards. And the campaign’s boulevard proposal would also require a legal basis for Bangor Marine to operate paid parking and receive the income. The same scrutiny should apply to both.

𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸?
The boulevard proposal appears to increase risk by requiring drivers to park and passengers to enter or leave vehicles alongside live traffic lanes. Cyclists and motorcyclists could face additional hazards from opening doors and vehicles pulling into or out of spaces. Families heading towards the gardens would also have to cross the road while motorists negotiate parking manoeuvres. These potential conflicts raise serious questions about whether the layout would be less safe than a dedicated off-street car park.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻, 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲?
Its alternative suggests the central dispute concerns protecting this particular grassy strip while accommodating commercial parking elsewhere.
That is a legitimate position. But campaigners should explain why impacts invoked against Bangor Marine become acceptable, or manageable, within their own design.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸.
Paid parking is condemned, then proposed. Commercial income is criticised, then accepted. Pollution is challenged, yet the alternative still accommodates cars beside the gardens. Trees are central to the campaign, but its own potentially greater tree losses demand an answer.

Protecting this particular strip is a legitimate aim. Presenting the impacts of one scheme as unacceptable while failing to account for comparable impacts in your own Boulevard proposal invites an obvious charge of hypocrisy.

Back in May, Bangor Marine put out an unusual invitation for a local individual, group or organisation to express an interest in becoming a 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 for the new Marine Gardens bandstand.

The successful participant was to work alongside 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, offering someone locally the rare opportunity to help influence a permanent feature of Bangor’s regenerated waterfront and potentially be credited as part of its design story.

Expressions of interest closed on 𝟭𝟰 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲, but there appears to have been no public update since.

So we were just wondering: 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, and was the opportunity followed through?

We often hear plenty of criticism about design choices once plans appear, so it would be interesting to know what level of interest there was when people were actually given the chance to get involved and help shape one.
