The White Hart is on the main street of Ashby De La Zouch. We are a 17th century Coaching Inn known as the pub with the bear in the cellar as in the pub's early days, the landlord kept a bear in the cellar to control rowdy customers at closing time. We still have a bear, although it’s stuffed! The White Hart is found on the main street running through the historical market town of Ashby De La Zouc

h, and is a great place to meet friends during the day for hot pub food and a drink. In the evening the inn provides entertainment and is ideal for those looking for a party. We are not only famous for Bears but also live pub music on Sundays - a showcase for various local talents. We serve food till late all week and it can be enjoyed indoors or alfresco on our patio area.

Every quiz has those answers that make everyone laugh, and this week certainly didn't disappoint! 😂

🏆 Geography Round B***y Prize

The question was:
"What is the most northern terminus on The Ghan railway?"

One team's unforgettable answer was... Dundee! 🤣

The correct answer is Darwin, making that guess an instant classic!

Our official B***y Prize winners, however, were Caravan Sesh for their answer to this question:

"What is the name of the world's largest inland sea, bordering Kazakhstan and covering approximately 371,000 square kilometres?"

Their answer: The Dead Sea 🌊

The correct answer is The Caspian Sea.

🏰 The White Hart is more than just a pub—it's one of Ashby de la Zouch's most remarkable historic buildings.

For over 400 years, this former coaching inn has welcomed travellers, merchants, soldiers and local residents. Situated in the heart of the town, it became an important stopping point on historic coaching routes, where horses were changed, journeys planned and news from across the country was exchanged.

⚔️ During the English Civil War (1642–1651), Ashby de la Zouch became a major Royalist stronghold. Ashby Castle (pictured below) was heavily fortified and endured a lengthy Parliamentary siege before surrendering in 1646 and being partially demolished on the orders of Parliament. Beneath the White Hart lies a network of historic tunnels leading towards the castle, documented as being used during this turbulent period to move people and supplies.

🐻 One of the White Hart's most famous stories is also one of its most unusual. A live bear was once kept in the pub's cellar (pictured below) by a former landlord, becoming one of the inn's most enduring and unique historical tales.

👻 As with many buildings of this age, the White Hart has its share of ghost stories. Staff and visitors have reported unexplained footsteps, mysterious figures and other strange occurrences (as mentioned on our blue plaque, also pictured below), adding another layer to the pub's fascinating past.

📜 Alongside its documented history are local legends of highwaymen seeking refuge at the coaching inn before continuing their journeys across the Midlands, making the White Hart a place where history and folklore meet.

From the English Civil War and centuries of coaching history to hidden tunnels, legendary tales and enduring local traditions, the White Hart remains one of Ashby de la Zouch's most treasured landmarks.
