"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

So proud of these four amazing colleagues today for completing the Belfast half marathon all in aid of Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke! Glenn and Ricky have ran it before and both smashed their previous times today - well done lads, super running! For Laura and Georgia it was their first half marathon and these girls knocked it out of the park! Their grit and determination to keep going and get it finished was outstanding! Huge well done! The buzz of the city was amazing and it was my absolute pleasure to be able to be there and cheer these guys across the finish line - you should all be very proud of yourselves today!Together they raised over £1500 for a fantastic cause.- Ashley, Asda community champion

My colleagues are always happy to jump in to any fundraising I do but when I suggested a skydive I didn't expect there to be six of them willing to jump out of a plane! However, on Sunday we set off on a road trip and our extremely brave colleagues completed a skydive all in aid of Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke.

Scott, Maggie, Heather, Constance, Georgia and Josh raised almost £4,000 between them for such a worthy cause! They bag packed, did a spinathon and were kindly sponsored by their friends, colleagues and families to raise such an outstanding amount of money.

We are so proud of them all! Well done guys. Who knows what we will get up to next.– Ashley, Asda community champion

I spent some time in our customer cafe today encouraging healthy eating for kids.

I was able to give out our rewards charts and 'try them all trackers' to encourage children to try some fruit and veg and embed good behavious at home.

The kids were great at engaging and enjoyed the 'pack a lunch' activity sheet we did together.

I was delighted to present Randalstown Ulster Scotts Cultural Society with a cheque for £500 through the Asda Foundations Better Together Fund this week.

This money will go towards a Christmas meeting for the group to bring them together over the long winter months when being in the company of others is so crucial.

When I got the phone call from Roisin at The Shed, Antrim to say that their building had caught on fire and they had lost everything I knew we needed to help in whatever way we could.

I got in touch with the Asda Foundation who were absolutely amazing and first of all granted me £150 to do an emergency shop to start gathering up all the essentials the group need.

The ladies were all delighted so when we surprised them with the cheque for an additional £1,500 grant they nearly dropped. This money will go such a long way towards helping the amazing Shed that does so much for our wider community and I am absolutely delighted that we were able to help.

A spokesperson for The Shed said: "Having lost the premises and all our belongings in a recent fire started in a neighbouring property this money and shopping means that we can start to rebuild our Shed. The money will go towards starting to replace our items lost to enable us to continue the work we do for our members and the wider community. We are eternally grateful to Ashley and the Asda Foundation for the vast amount of help they have given us and really appreciate it all."

On Saturday evening I went to an emergency fundraiser for The Ladies Shed that unfortunately burnt down last Thursday night. Within 24 hours Tiny House Coffee had the quiz organised and I was happy to head along with some prizes, run the raffle and sell the tickets for them to help out. A great evening with amazing community spirit. They raised a fantastic £690 which will all go straight back in to getting the ladies up and running again! Well done to everyone that turned up and showed their support.- Ashley, Asda community champion
