When theatre opens the conversation about mental health…
We’re delighted to be playing a small but important part in the upcoming production of The Son at Altrincham Garrick Playhouse.
Our involvement began when Altrincham BID introduced us to director Jonathan Barker. Jonathan wanted to make sure the mental health themes within the production were handled with care and clinical accuracy — and that’s where our very own superstar Jim Sales stepped in!
Jim has worked with Jonathan and the production team, sharing his clinical knowledge and experience to help ensure that the language and references to mental health are as accurate, sensitive and authentic as possible.
And this really matters.
The Son, written by Florian Zeller, explores the experiences of 17-year-old Nicolas as he struggles with his mental health following his parents’ separation. It touches on some difficult and deeply important subjects, including adolescent mental health, family relationships and self-harm.
For us, opportunities like this are another way of opening up conversations about mental health, challenging stigma and helping people recognise that sometimes, what’s happening beneath the surface isn’t always easy to see.
We’ll also be providing CFC information and resources at the theatre throughout the run, so that anyone affected by the themes of the play can find somewhere to turn.
We’re incredibly proud to be involved — and we can’t wait to see the finished production.
