Today’s special is watercress, leek and potato soup — a delicious taste of Hampshire history.

Just eight miles from Chawton, New Alresford is known as the UK’s watercress capital. For generations, Hampshire watercress was grown in the county’s crystal-clear chalk streams and transported by steam train to London markets on what later became known as the famous Watercress Line.

Fresh, peppery, and packed with goodness, watercress has been enjoyed here for centuries — and we think it makes the perfect lunch on a beautiful summer day.

Why not stop by and try a bowl for yourself?

We like to think of carrot cake as a British classic, but the natural sweetness of carrots means they turn up in puddings around the world. India has gajar halwa. Iraq has khabis al-jazar. The first proper carrot cake recipe we know of is actually French: Gâteau de Carotte from Vol. 2 of “L’art du Cuisinier” by Antonie Beauviliers. However international its origins, carrot cake always feels quintessentially English when we serve it up at Chawton. Especially when we make it with carrots from our own garden!

We love our courtyard! These mellow Tudor bricks soak up the sun and create a warm, quiet retreat from the world. Perfect to enjoy a late lunch or sweet treats from our Tea Room, just through a door on the south wall. No need to buy tickets for the house or garden if you are coming up to the tea room only.

We start our afternoon teas with hand cut sandwiches … no crusts, naturally! … with a variety of fillings chosen from what is best on the day. Then on to our beloved home-made scones, before a range of lovingly assembled cakes.
