❤️Help us secure the future of our little coffee shop.

Over the years, this tiny building has seen many businesses come and go. When we took it on, it had been sitting empty for some time.

We’ve poured everything into bringing it back to life — and now we want to make sure it stays Chalk’s home for good.

Please support our Crowdfunder, donate if you can, and most importantly, SHARE our story.

Help us secure Chalk Coffee’s future, protect a much-loved independent coffee shop and keep serving exceptional coffee in Alfriston

A huge thank you to David Jordan for stopping by for a coffee and capturing Chalk Coffee Co so beautifully. This video perfectly sums up everything we’ve worked so hard to create – a warm welcome, exceptional coffee, and a little corner of Alfriston where people love to slow down and stay awhile.

If you haven’t visited us yet, this is your sign. ☕🤎

🧺✨ Sussex Trugs Have Come Home ✨🧺

Did you know that the Bats Wing was once home to a Sussex Trug shop? That’s why we’re especially proud to be hosting and selling genuine Sussex Trugs during Sussex Craft Week.

The Sussex Trug is one of the county’s oldest and most iconic crafts. Originally designed over 200 years ago for farmers, gardeners and hop pickers, trugs are handmade using sweet chestnut for the frame and willow for the boards. Their lightweight yet incredibly strong design made them the perfect basket for harvesting fruit, vegetables and flowers across Sussex.

Today, the craft is still alive thanks to skilled local makers who continue to build each trug using traditional methods passed down through generations.

Pop in for a coffee, learn a little local history and take home a piece of Sussex craftsmanship.

Interesting fact: The modern Sussex Trug industry was largely shaped by the Thomas Smith family of Herstmonceux, who began producing trugs commercially in the early 1800s. The design became so successful that Sussex Trugs were exported around the world and are now recognised as one of Britain’s most famous traditional rural crafts.
