Some sad news to bear again today folks. Our dear George Rodger passed away two weeks ago today.

To say George was a regular at Bonobo would be an understatement. I'm sure you will have already heard to what extent George was a part of the furniture there. He came through every single day for us. He kept us busy and we kept him out of trouble.

He was a constant, very loyal, always supportive, always honest with feedback. We saw him in every mood, every way, in humour and on darker days. We were there for him in the way he needed us. We respected him deeply and he was part of the training for new staff too! The team all loved him very much.

I feel like George didn't fit the image of a vegan at all, you wouldn't have guessed it from looking at him, perhaps not by speaking to him. I like that about him. He just deeply understood and accepted the facts of the matter and then got on with it, supporting and furthering the cause through the way he lived his life. I love that about him.

When my first son was born, George put together a "Welcome Pack" for him. It was an educational resource, with teachings, facts and diagrams about the world and explanations about the earth, geography, evolution. An ex teachers way of saying, hello - this is where you've landed!

We were so thankful for his loyalty and love. He had a big heart and he won't be forgotten.

I'd like to think he's in his happy place at the cafe now. So what will it be today George? Xx

Sharing these details incase any of our other regulars knew Martin and would like to go along...

We were all very sorry to hear of this beautiful humans passing. Martin supported us from day one and we loved seeing him hanging out enjoying the garden sipping his favourite turmeric lattes. Martin was always kind, patient, calm even on our craziest days and had time for everyone.

Well what can we say , we would just like to say a huge thank you to Steve at the vegan bay baker , we consider Steve a friend and would like to take this last opportunity to big up his shops , the least we can do after he has supplied us constantly for the last 2 years since he opened up his vegan bakery . Which is now 2 shops , both can be found at the address below .Vegan Bay Baker

Not only has he supplied us with , bread for our sandwiches , bagels , rowies , buns for the mighty breakfast roll , but sweet treats like the caramel do ring which we know was enjoyed by so many of you with one of our lattes .
So fear not vegans you can can still get these treats fresh from 08.30 in both his shops so go check him out if you haven’t already done so , I know we will definitely be going there to stock up on same treats ( forgot to mention they do vegan cakes to order I’ve popped up a few photos as they really are something else )

Sad news to bear today folks. We are closing our doors as of 4pm tomorrow. We have tried very hard for a very long time, but we just can’t make it work. With sharply dropping sales, rising prices and the economic climate we see before us, we realise now that we can’t continue to be Bonobo.

I want to thank everyone for their love, work, passion and time. Those are really the things that have made the cafe what it is over the last 7 years - from the moment of conception through the green door at the Wellbeing Centre we were given a chance at life, to make a difference and bring veganism to our city. It’s been a long journey all the way out of the pink door of our loved cafe at Skene Street. I think it’s safe to say that everyone who has ever been on this side of the counter has learned something about themselves and others from the experience. I hope that we have been a net positive along the way for the animals, people and the planet.

Thanks from the bottom of our heart to all our customers - you shaped us, and made coming to work a joy. Thank you to all our local suppliers. I’m just sorry we couldn’t keep going for you.

We leave you at a time when you have great number of options of amazing places to go and relax, drink, eat, decompress, socialise and laugh. Including our chums at Red Robin Records, Foodstory, Vegan Bay Baker, Biocafe, Bandit Bakery, Second Home, Ruthies Cafe, Cult of Coffee, Contour Cafe, Roots, Frogmoon, Mount… and many more. Vegan options: fully available in 2023 and that is a wonderful thing. If there’s anything I could ask of each person reading this post with sadness, it is to make a deeply held commitment within yourself to shop local. With cafes and restaurants, this is easy to do - and could be the key to keeping the places above and their suppliers in existence.

We have a really incredible team of humans here with a wide range of skills and talents. If any local places have opportunities for them please contact us.

A final note. There is still a functioning cafe set up here at Skene Street. If anyone has a plan and a fresh perspective and would like to give new life to their cafe dreams in this location, do get in touch soon.
