Now that’s a-peel-ing!

At Keenan Recycling, we love seeing clever ideas that give food waste a second chance and this one is bursting with potential.

Researchers at Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe are teaming up with BIOVIT to explore how fruit and vegetable processing waste could be transformed into a natural source of Vitamin C.

Instead of seeing food leftovers as the end of the journey, this project is asks what if waste was actually a valuable ingredient waiting to be discovered. With innovative green extraction methods, scientists are exploring ways to recover nutrients that would otherwise be lost, helping reduce food waste, support the circular economy, and create healthier, more sustainable ingredients for a fruitful future!

Congratulations to Dolce Catering for leading the way with its UK-first Wasteless Plate campaign and pilot zero food waste school lunch menu.

By designing recipes that use more of every ingredient, donating surplus meals and turning unavoidable food waste into green energy, Dolce is showing that every plate can make a difference.

Better still, it's helping inspire the next generation to understand the value of food and why wasting less matters.

At Keenan Recycling, we love seeing organisations champion food waste prevention first and sustainable recycling for what's left behind.

First-class degree in sustainability

Bristol is proving that sustainability isn't just something we teach. Huge congratulations to the University of Bristol for climbing into the Top 100 globally in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings, achieving an impressive 56th place out of 1,646 universities across 117 countries.

Even more inspiring, the university ranked 6th in the world for Sustainable Cities and Communities.

At Keenan Recycling, we're passionate about seeing organisations lead by example. Whether it's pioneering research, encouraging responsible consumption or helping build more sustainable communities, every action helps move us towards a more circular future. It's great to see Bristol continuing to raise the bar and inspire the next generation of environmental leaders.

Waste less!

The message is getting louder and it's coming from some of the world's leading organisations.

Together, WRAP, WWF-UK, World Resources Institute (WRI), ReFED, and the The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) are calling on world leaders to put food waste at the heart of climate action ahead of COP31.

Why? Because food waste isn't just about what's left on the plate.

- Around one billion tonnes of food are wasted every year.

- Food loss and waste contribute 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

- Reducing food waste means cutting methane emissions, strengthening food security and making better use of our planet's precious resources.

At Keenan Recycling, this is exactly why we do what we do every day. While preventing edible food from becoming waste must always come first, any unavoidable food waste should be collected separately and recycled into renewable energy and nutrient-rich biofertiliser instead of ending up in landfill.

It's encouraging to see organisations championing the same vision: where a future where less food is wasted, more people are fed, and fewer emissions reach our atmosphere.

🔥 Yes, London is burning… but this time, we can help put out the fire.

The image of the Great Fire of London reminds us of one of history's most devastating disasters.

Today, London isn't facing flames in the same way but with temperatures soaring across the UK, another kind of fire is burning i.e. the climate crisis.

The UN Secretary-General recently warned that "London isn't just calling, it's cooking," as he launched a global Call to Action on methane.

While carbon dioxide dominates the climate conversation, methane is over 80 times more powerful than CO₂ at trapping heat over a 20-year period. One of its biggest sources? Food waste sent to landfill.

At Keenan Recycling, every commercial food waste collection helps keep organic waste out of landfill, reducing methane emissions while creating renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser through anaerobic digestion.

Today's challenge gives us something history didn't have. A choice. By recycling food waste properly, businesses can help reduce methane emissions.

Get your bins in a row before 2027!

For SMEs across the UK, the clock is ticking.

From March 2027, all businesses (regardless of size) will be required to separate recyclable materials from general waste as part of the UK's Simpler Recycling reforms.

Many small businesses are still unaware the legislation applies to them, while others are wondering where they'll find the space for extra bins and collections.

The good news is that preparing now doesn't have to be complicated.

✅ Audit your waste streams
✅ Start separating recyclables early
✅ Build recycling habits into everyday operations
✅ Review your current waste collection arrangements

At Keenan Recycling, we know that compliance is about more than avoiding fines. It's about creating smarter workplaces, reducing waste, supporting the circular economy and making sustainability part of business as usual.

The businesses that start today won't be scrambling tomorrow. After all, when it comes to recycling regulations, it's always better to be ahead of the waste curve.

The Binfluencer has spoken: plastics need a different gig!

A big shoutout to Britain's favourite "Binfluencer" for helping spread an important recycling message. As food waste collections continue to grow across the UK, one simple mistake can cause a big problem: putting plastic bags, carrier bags, or polystyrene into your food waste bin/caddy.

While supermarket carrier bags may be recyclable through dedicated collection points, they don't belong in your food waste bin. When plastic or polystyrene ends up mixed with food waste, it contaminates the load and can prevent it from being processed correctly into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser.

At Keenan Recycling, we see first-hand the difference that clean food waste makes. Every apple core, tea bag and leftover scrap has the potential to do something positive for the planet but only when the right materials go in the right bin.

A quick check before you close the lid helps keep collections running smoothly and ensures your food waste can complete its recycling journey.

Story of a greener tomorrow starts today!

We're delighted to see Somerset Council, alongside Biffa and SUEZ, encouraging young minds to think about sustainability through The Great Somerset Food Recycling Adventure story competition.

Children have an incredible ability to see possibilities where others see problems. By inspiring them to write about food recycling, we're helping to nurture a generation that understands the value of resources, the importance of reducing waste, and the positive impact they can have on the planet.

At Keenan Recycling, we firmly believe that today's young storytellers, recyclers and environmental champions will become tomorrow's innovators, leaders and changemakers.

Every apple core, banana peel and leftover scrap recycled today helps create renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser for the future. But perhaps even more importantly, every conversation we have with children about sustainability helps grow a lifelong commitment to protecting our environment.

Turning data into digestate!

The future of food waste recycling just got a little smarter. Huge congratulations to BiofuelAi on winning the UK Government's prestigious Manchester Prize and securing £1 million in funding to help accelerate AI innovation in the anaerobic digestion sector.

Their AI-powered platform is helping biogas operators unlock more renewable energy from food waste and organic materials by providing real-time insights into what's happening inside digesters.

The results from pilot sites are impressive. Up to 10% increase in revenue and 28% reduction in carbon emissions.

At Keenan Recycling, we're passionate about the role anaerobic digestion plays in creating a cleaner, more circular economy. Food waste isn't waste at all when it's transformed into renewable energy, biomethane and nutrient-rich biofertiliser.

Innovations like AI, digital twins and predictive modelling are helping the AD industry become even more efficient, unlocking greater environmental benefits from every tonne of food waste collected.

Say 'I do' to less food waste!

Wedding season is all about making memories, but it can also create a surprising amount of food waste.

Research from Sainsbury's found that around 10% of all wedding food is thrown away, with the average couple wasting £488 worth of food on their big day.

The biggest culprits? Wedding cake, edible favours, evening buffets and leftover drinks.

Wedding cake remains one of the biggest challenge with 45% of couples said most of their wedding cake was left over.

Reducing wedding food waste doesn't mean cutting back on celebrations. Simple steps such as confirming guest numbers early, being realistic about evening buffets, avoiding duplicate desserts and planning for leftovers can make a huge difference.

At Keenan Recycling, we believe the best wedding gift for the planet is ensuring unavoidable food waste is collected separately and recycled in a sustainable manner.
