The Bere Island Heritage, Cultural and Visitor Centre and En Garde are proud to be sharing with you information regarding our planned event this December on Bere Island
*** December 1796 ***
'En Garde - 1796 Expédition d'Irlande & Tra na bhFrancach!' in partnership with Beare Island Heritage & Cultural Centre.
December 1796:
A French fleet of warships lies off the Irish coast.
Nearly 15,000 soldiers wait to land.
Among them is Wolfe Tone, carrying the hopes of a rebellion.
But the winds rise. The seas turn against them. And Ireland waits.
This December (Dec 5-6th) on the 230th Anniversary of this fascinating story, we journey to Bere Island to commemorate that extraordinary expedition- to the very shore where a French vessel finally came ashore, a place still known today as Tra na bhFrancach - French Beach.
More than two centuries later, we return to the place where the French came ashore, where revolution met the Atlantic, and where the course of Irish history might have been very different.
Come stand where history landed.
Details to be announced soon.
