10 things I wish I’d known before opening our pastry shop, after 10 years with Mi Cielo.
6. Learn to say no.
For a long time, we were afraid of losing a customer if we said no.
So we said yes to almost everything… even making vegan and gluten-free cakes for Christmas. You get the idea! 🤪
We wanted to do it all because we love making people happy.
It just took us a little too long to realize that we are not Superman!
7. Focus on the positive.
There will always be people who love what you do and others who won’t like your work or your personality.
One bad review could haunt me for days.
As we say in Mexico:
“No eres monedita de oro para caerle bien a todos.”
So save your energy for your projects, your loved ones, and the people who appreciate you.
8. Surround yourself with the right people.
Skills can be taught.
Attitude is what stays.
You can train someone, support them, and invest time in their development… but if they lack the right attitude, commitment, or respect, all your efforts will be in vain.
So choose your people carefully.
A little piece of advice: if you have a doubt, there is no doubt!
Trust your instict.
9. Act with love.
For years, we moved forward with fear.
The fear of failing, of not having enough customers, of running out of money… it was exhausting.
Then, one day, my dear friend Ale told me:
“Blanca, think and act with love, not fear.”
And something changed. We started seeing things differently.
That’s when everything really took off.
The connections, the projects, the opportunities.
10. Get out of your bubble.
For years, we did what we knew best: work.
But we forgot one essential thing: connecting with people.
One encounter can open a door, spark an idea, or change your path.
So, get out of your kitchen.
Attend a trade show, go to an event, meet people. Put yourself out there.
Your future is also built through the people you meet.
