Heritage to Hope. A Nights Tale.

“Life is a collection of moments and sometimes we are blessed when these moments make such an impression that will resound for an eternity.”

Joseph Osenga and Marcus Aurelius lived lifetimes apart, yet we draw on their collective wisdom to tell the story of “Conservation International Fiji’s 21st Anniversary Gala Event”.

The theme was set apart and the 8 staff think tank that parsed it together will in retrospect realise that they hit gold.

Heritage to Hope - phrased so beautifully in the description that it is an ode to the last 21 years, feet in the mud, building a foundation. A heritage. And a nod to the future, our head in the sky, courageous, respectful, optimistic and filled with hope.

The descriptive bar set high and the meticulous planning that followed, executed to the beat.

The cameras flashed, aura farmed (might need to look this up) guests regaled to red carpet entry, copious servings of kava and the usual delectable artisan spread for which the Grand Pacific Hotel is known.

The program started, our visiting Chief Conservation Officer and President, Dr. Daniela Raik set the pace and the speeches excelled with timed precision. Conservation International Fiji took the occasion as an opportunity to express profound appreciation and accolades, to those that have served to lay the foundations to what it is today.

By the cutting of the cake and the raising of the toast - led by the newly crowned Miss Hibiscus, Sala Korosaya, celebrations were in full swing in the usual Fijian fervor. It is decorum to put ones pen down and join the festivities, because in such times, the kava bowl proves mightier than the pen.

Happiness Diaries - Daniela Raik in the Isles of Smiles

Today 22 September 2026.

Over the last two days Daniela has officiated at two main events and attended round tables that are significant to the development of the Fiji Program.

Yesterday started off with a breakfast bilateral with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Hon Viliame Gavoka. Her next event in the same morning was to officiate at the Lau Seascape Symposium, where partners, communities, and stakeholders touched base on the theme “People, Ocean, Islands – Working Together for a Resilient Lau.”

After lunch it was a road trip to the Ra Office site. An opportunity to soak up the sun and meet communities on the ground. An excursion that culminated in the signing of our tripartite MOU with the Ra Provincial Office and the Bose Vanua Cokovata ni Vanua o Ra (BVR).

Early this morning she took to the field and observed our activities on the ground. Also an opportunity to drop into our field office and share insights with our program team.

Her entourage returned to Suva for a mid afternoon roundtable with partners and stakeholders. Then this afternoon the team glitzed up for the 21 Anniversary Gala Event, this evening at the Grand Pacific Hotel. That event is still in progress as we speak, so we will tell you all about it in our next diary update.

In the meantime keep that smile on because HOPE is here to stay.

Continuing her visit in the Pacific, Daniela Raik has landed in the Isles of Smiles. She was greeted by the CI Team and accorded a traditional welcome ceremony to commemorate her first visit into Fiji.

It’s going to be a hectic start to the week for Daniela. Meeting government ministers, partners and stakeholders with a brief respite into the field for the signing of an MOU between the Ra province and its chiefs (Ra is one of the largest provinces in Fiji).

On day 2 of the work week, she heads back into the laid back lights of Suva City to deliver the keynote speech at the, Heritage to Hope - 21st Anniversary Gala Night.

She spends her last day in Suva talking strategy with the larger Pacific Leadership Team, than her Happiness adventures pauses briefly, because as they say, it never really ends.

We will share with you the smiles, laughter and every so often the business end of her experience in the Happiness Capital of the Pacific Universe. (like marvel universe, bit of a stretch but we know you love it)

It’s our 21st anniversary next week and we have so much to be thankful for and so many people to be thankful to.

Our team is gearing up for celebratory gala event celebrating the journey from “Heritage to Hope”. This invites are being sent out and we are excited for the RSVP’s to come back, so we can lock into this key event.

There are other programs in play throughout the week. The highlight for us is that our Chief Conservation Officer and President Dr. Daniela Raik will be in the Isles of Smiles for an official visit. Like all things CI, happiness is embodied in our call to action, with our feet in the mud and head in the sky.

She has site visits, stakeholder meetings, bilaterals and courtesy visits to tide through with the gala dinner as the main feature.

This is a reflection point for CI Fiji, where we take stock, weigh ourselves by the measure of our impact, the blessing of donors, partners and stakeholders that believe in our mission, and be inspired to look to the future with hope.

HOPE is here to stay.

🌊 Community Consultation in Naivilaca, Noco

The Integrated Coastal Management Plan consultation in Naivilaca village gathered 22 participants who shared their perspectives on safeguarding our coastal resources.

Reflections of HOPE from the community:

• “We see the changes in our shoreline every year. This plan gives us hope that our children will inherit a healthier environment.”

• “Working together across villages is the only way forward. Today’s dialogue reminded us that our voices matter in shaping solutions.”

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and Conservation International (CI) have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration on nature conservation, climate resilience, sustainable development, conservation finance, and community-led solutions across the Pacific.

The agreement, signed during the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, brings together SPREP’s regional mandate and convening role across 26 Pacific Island countries and territories with Conservation International’s global expertise in biodiversity conservation, science, sustainable finance, and locally led conservation approaches.
Together, the two organisations will work to support Pacific-led solutions to some of the region’s most urgent environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressures on marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

The MOU was signed by SPREP Director General, Mr Sefanaia Nawadra, and Dr. Sebastian Troëng, the Chief Executive Officer of Conservation International.

“The Pacific’s future depends on protecting the natural systems that sustain our communities, cultures and economies,” said Mr. Sefanaia Nawadra.

“SPREP is responsible with supporting our members to protect and manage their environment and natural resources. This partnership with Conservation International strengthens our collective ability to support Pacific countries and communities in achieving their environmental priorities through science, innovation, partnerships and locally driven action.”
