Ziway Lodge

Ziway Lodge This 3 star hotel is located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley town of Ziway. The Lodge is a true Oasis with a waterfall-fed pool. Background and Origin. Facilities.

Situated near the most beautiful Lake and surrounded by volcanic mountains, now the focus of plans for major reforestation. Welcome to Ziway (Batu) Lodge
in the Rift Valley town of Batu. This family-run Lodge was conceived by its owners back in 2007, partly as a means to earn sustainable income which could be used to help support the environment and most needy communities, individuals and Equines

in the Batu locality. Eight years later it has been completed!! Ziway Batu Lodge is envisaged to be the “Mother Project” from which a number of offsprings are planned, all of which will be focussed on developing Ethiopia. While the Lodge is hoped to be a successful commercial enterprise, its objective is charitable. Location and Development. Initially, lakeside locations were identified in both Shala-Abijata (2005) and Langano (2006), but both opportunities fell through for different reasons. Subsequently the current location on the northern edge of Ziway (Batu) township was identified. While the site was not on the lakeside, Ziway (Batu) lies within the Lakeland Rift Valley of Ethiopia, within one kilometer of Ziway Lake and within easy access to all lakes. The Lodge lies adjacent to the Addis Ababa-Kenya (Moyale) tarred highway, some 2-3 hours drive south from Addis itself. The site, measuring some 60 by 30 meters, was undeveloped when first identified, but was walled and gated only. A design was then conceived, as below. Its British owners, Selas, Michael and Katrina Russell, are committed to helping the development of Ethiopia, through their compassion and their professions of Nursing, Forestry/Environment and Anthropology. The Lodge is a totally new venture but a means to underpin their dreams. The Lodge’s development was wholly financed from family savings and income, hence the very extended period of development. A significant part of ther capital was earned through the family’s 3 hectare Christmas tree plantation project in the UK, that was established in 1994, supplying local communities with fresh Spruce, Fir and Pine, along with refreshments, children’s free gifts and a special and seasonal “day out”. The Lodge has been designed to try to capture something of the “Old Africa”, with red roofs and floors, high ceilings, luxuriant gardens and traditional materials, set into a peaceful environment. Accomodation comprises six double bedrooms with twin beds and separate shower/wet room, four large single bedrooms with small double bed and en suite bathroom, four standard single bedrooms with small double bed and en suit bathroom. All bedrooms have their own veranda, along with satellite TV, fridge with complimentary spring water, tea-making facility, internal telephone and mosquito nets. Traditional materials have been used as much as possible in order to provide both beauty and comfort. In addition to the 14 bedrooms described above a VIP bedroom has recently been completed but this is awaiting furnishing. The main centre of the Lodge comprises an “old world” style building, which includes a restaurant with character bar, quiet lounge/library, and an upper open-air bar with conference and party opportunities. There is in addition free wi-fi, shop (yet to open) and paradise pool (1-3 meters) with children’s area (40 cm deep) and a waterfall. The Lodge is set in luxuriant garden’s, mostly planted before construction started, giving the impression of long establishment, in which a range of tropical trees and shrubs have been selected, including Papaya, Mango, Guava, Avocado, Flambouyany, Flame of the Forest, Jackaranda, Olive, Pomegranite, Cassia, Silk Oak, Casmir, Sweet Banana, Wild Banana (Enset), Eucalyptus, Hibiscus, Oleander, Bouganvillea, Aloe, Passionfruit etc. As soon as possible all species will be labelled to allow guests to identify those which are unfamiliar to them. The shop, located beneath the VIP bedroom, accessed from the stone-paved car park, while not yet equipped, is proposed to provide both traditional/cultural items, procured from local markets, as well as basic requirements of visitors. Soft drinks and information will also be available at this point within the lodge. A similar building is proposed in the future within which, apart from a second VIP bedroom, an Environmental Centre is planned, which will display items, photographs, text and maps relating to Rift Valley Flora, Fauna, Lakes, Geology, Geography, Metrology, Landuse, Culture etc. Such should be of interest to visitors and it is also planned to invite international school children to use this centre for study, while exchanging with Ethiopian students. Another dream!! While the Lodge provides a secluded get-away, a social meeting point, and an ideal venue for a workshop/meeting or conference, it is also planned to provide local tours for international visitors. Based on Ziway (Batu), visits and tours can be made to so many fascinating places of interest, for days out or for extended nights away. Such locations can include lakes, volcanoes, waterfalls, hot springs, cloud forest, National parks, Game Reserves, Rock Churches etc. It is also proposed to establish a relationship with local vinyards, flower growers, sugar cane plantations etc, to allow visitors to understand the processes involved. While some knowledge already exists, it is shortly proposed to undertake site visits to many areas of potential interest, to record information and take photographic records. Such will be compiled into an album for visitors to peruse in order to select their own bespoke adventure. Currently one 30 TD5 Land Rover is available for such tours. Access

While national guests are likely to be independently mobile, international visitors can be collected by the Lodge from Bole International Airport (delivered very comfortably and professionally by the national airline, Ethiopian Airlines, from most international origins), and driven down the Rift Valley to Ziway (Batu), where the adventure can continue. Alternatively, guests can stay in Addis Ababa for some days and nights, to get a historical, “urban experience”, prior toproceeding to Ziway. There is a proposal for our Lodge to build a guesthouse “outstation” in Addis Ababa, where land is already available, where guests could stay, but such is only a possibility at this stage. Rates

How the time is passing; far too quickly!

I am sorry that I have not provided an update over the Lodge for some time now; Selas and I have been trying to work out how our future will be, having now monitored our income and expenditure over some months. With no Manager, Housekeeper, Driver or Gardener, we are just about breaking even. We never intended to make a profit or to earn any salary for ourselves, so we could “keep going” as things are, with high costs and fewer local customers, with less to spend. Forget about tourists! In September, with the New Year looming, the Lodge may be forced by government to incur additional costs, and if so we would be working at a loss, and we will be forced to close.

It has been 5 years since the lodge was burnt down in pre Civil war riots, and since then our requests for compensation have achieved nothing. With limited funds we have been able to rebuild and partially equip six of our fifteen bedrooms, repair our little Ford car and replace our famous “workhorse” Land Rover that was burnt out, with a very old but beautiful Defender.

The Lodge was only ever meant to be a “stepping stone” from which we had plans for a free medical facility for the most in need, and in addition we developed detailed plans for a major reforestation of a nearby escarpment that would both provide sustainable livelihoods for the surrounding farmers, while healing a vast area of degraded land for environmental, climatic and wildlife good. All those objectives are now pipe dreams. Additional concepts are forever coming into our minds, to cover such elements as equine protection, pilot rainwater- harvesting smallholder farm, urban fringe horticultural development etc etc; all potentially lost.

If in September the government does not force us to close, or if compensation is granted, then the Lodge has a future and our development plans have a chance to be placed back on the table. If this good scenario does not take place, then we will need a “Plan B”. The Lodge must close for income-earning hospitality and maybe become a “Centre for development”. It could be converted into a medical facility alongside an environmental/livelihoods hub, but to implement such we would need help from all those who would like to join with us, whether organisations, institutions or individuals. Such would have the interest combined with skills, time, items or finance. Such would allow the “Phoenix” to arise from the actual ashes!

September is approaching and the Lodge needs to survive. For all of you that have followed us over the many years, and for those that have only just found us, please contact us with your own thoughts and possibilities; it would be great if we could work together to bring the “dream” back to life. Exciting!

Our best wishes to you all. Mike

Our Western Christmas is passing and 2025 is very close. Selas and I are still in the UK, where we have been working with our Christmas Tree plantation over the last month or so; our love of growing our trees helped to build our Lodge and will help to rebuild her from the ashes. Our friends and our staff are well managing our Lodge in our absence; I am sure they view the Lodge as their home, which is as Selas and I want it to be. The New Year will hopefully show us that we have a future in Batu and Ethiopia, and that the most amazing country can re-grow from its own “ashes” and become No.1 in Africa once again. Selas or I will return to Ethiopia shortly and it will be great to see you and host you once again. Wishing you all a very Happy and Peaceful Western New Year and a Very Happy and safe Ethiopian Christmas. Our very best wishes Selas, Katrina and Mike

A Sunday evening back in the UK and we appear to be at a critical crossroad regarding the Lodge's future. Tomorrow may bring hope or an acceptance that we cannot confront "the system" any longer. Selas and I are tired. What has happened to us is only a reflection of what is happening in the World; peopled by a good majority but................So much potential everywhere. So exhausting and so sad. Let's hope we win through. As always Selas and I thank all of you that want us to stay. Positivity needed!!

Kirempt is almost over and the sun appears more than the clouds. As it gets hotter the Lodge in the "forest" stays cool and green, and the waterfall continues to splash its way into the natural waters of the pool. We are still going but continue to worry about our future. So many good friends and contacts are really trying to support us to stay. The thought of leaving you all is difficult to contemplate. The planned developments of forest and clinic come in and out of our minds, with such dependent on the Lodge's survival. Meskerem is almost with us and so a new year must bring the whole of Ethiopia new hope; this very special country has been on self destruct for too long; kindness and understanding is now needed. Selas and I really hope that we will be with you all into the future.

It has been some time since we last provided an update to our Lodge. Since its near-destruction in June of 2020, to be followed by the civil war in the north, Selas and I returned in early 2023 to start to rebuild. We found nearly all of the 15 bedrooms burnt out, together with our poor Land Rover and the little Ford smashed. We were "lucky" that the main building, admin block and pool were little affected; our brave staff and neighbours helped to protect these. The garden with its many trees survived, though some trees were badly damaged or killed. So far we have managed to bring six of the bedrooms back to life, and we re-opened about 4 months ago. The Lodge looks beautiful once again, a true paradise, but it hides the blacken interiors of nine of the bedrooms. With exhausted funds and few customers due to both the Winter weather and the national security situation, the Lodge is struggling, but just about keeping its head above water. Its future is uncertain for a number of reasons in addition to the above, and if we fail, so will our many plans to support the local poorer people with their livelihoods, health and environment. Our dreams and the focus of our lives will also be lost. We live in hope. Will it be Phoenix or Dodo? Too early to say. Ethiopia is a unique and most beautiful country; we are trying to be part of that.

Ref. British Lodge Opening 2023.1

To all our friends, old customers and future guests at last we are able to tell you that our Lodge has almost been repaired after its destruction in June 2020. Only some of the bedrooms remain to be re-equipped, otherwise the bar, restaurant, pool and gardens are as you may remember them. Only our poor cats have been reduced to just one.

After its destruction Selas and I were is despair; all our plans effectively burnt and broken, as was the Lodge. We waited for almost 3 years to know if we were ever going to be able to return. Thanks to God and human kindness and understanding Ethiopia is gradually returning to peace, and we wish everyone to live in harmony with each other, to allow this amazing country to rebuild itself.

Selas and I want to be with you all into the long term, and hopefully our previous plans can be “dusted off” and in time implemented.

While I remain in the UK for the moment, I believe Selas will be opening the doors for the Elders tomorrow, Saturday 9th. September.

We were not sure if this day would ever come but from the ashes…………!

We can’t wait to see you all returning to enjoy the special environment and be at peace.

Thank you for being so patient and finally wishing you all and your families a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR.
