This tree makes for amazing composition. The branches stretch out, twisting and turning, extending out into the Campo ready to produce the number 2 tree fruit of the area, the bellota or acorn. This is the primary food for Pata Negra , of which the legendary Jamon Serrano or Iberico is made. That's right, a truly iconic product for the entire of Spain - the best of the best, is farmed here in the… [ 42 more words ]

Post 1, so I have been spouting on about this blog for 2 years. I live in a massive sweet chestnut orchard - hectares and hectares of Castaño. They came with Colombo, alongside the potato and other new-world delights 525 years ago to this region - where they were planted for the first time. This industry is what keeps the Sierra alive, and I love these trees, so this is my homage. These pictures are from 2016, when I was just getting a taste for these gnarly beauties.

Castano del Robledo: How to describe Castano?...unspoilt, secret, charming. In all honesty, it's personality is aloof. Its people keep themselves to themselves and are happy to keep it this way. For many years it has been cut off from the rest of the comings and goings of la sierra, the bigger, better roads to Portugal, Sevilla, Huelva and Badajoz. It has escaped the hustle and bustle of development, with a self sufficiency unimagined for a population dwindling to a mere 120 residents. [ 586 more words ]

Water. Water is life. Anyone who's lived in Andalucia knows that more than anything. La Sierra De Aracena has an abundance. And owing to this we are blessed with green landscapes and shady walks all year round. Andalucia is incredibly diverse, from the snowy mountains of Sierra Nevada, to the fine golden sands of Costa Del Sol; the desert like plains of Almeria to the stunning mountain views in Sierra de Segura, Las Villas y Cazorla in Jaen; from the charming casco antiguo in the port town of Cadiz to the spectacular moorish palace, El Alhambra of Granada, it has it all. La Pena De Arias Montano, Castano Del Robledo, Sierra de Aracena. Huelva. Andalucia.

One of the most spectacular walks from Castaño is to La Peña de Arias Montano. The first leg of the journey is up the old roman steps, to the top of the hill that rises above the village. We always…
