The Granada Tapas Network

The Granada Tapas Network TheGTN is a social network to celebrate and disseminate the Granada tapas phenomenon. Good wine, food and fun!

Granada is one of the few places in Spain where bars still serve you a tasty tidbit (tapa) on a saucer beside your drink. Perhaps it's because this city has 75,000 hungry and frugal university students. Whatever the cause, the tapas phenomenon has taken off in Granada in a big way, giving rise to a mass following, including locals and foreign visitors alike. All agree that there's no more amusing

night out than a "noche de tapeo" strolling from bar to bar sampling their drinks and tapas. Stiff competition among bars is constantly raising the gastronomic benchmark, making for more imaginative, more delicious tapas. The city hall encourages the tapas movement by organizing tapas competitions.

A Network to Celebrate the Granada Tapas Tradition

This network was created to celebrate and disseminate the Granada tapas tradition, a custom to be treasured because Granada is one of the last places in Spain where waiters still serve a free snack (tapa) alongside your drink. This incentive to eat, drink, and be merry together has evolved into major social and gastronomic phenomenon.

It has given rise to a let's-go-out-for-tapas lifestyle phenomenon which entails strolling from bar to bar, eating, drinking and, above all, laughing. Once a strictly Spanish custom, this social and gastronomical outing--which finds it's highest expression in Granada--now attracts enthusiastic followers from all over the world.

Some tapas notes from Ferran Adriá, Spain's most famous chef:

"The tapa is one of the most difficult things to define. One beautiful definition is: The tapa is the spirit of Andalusia, placed on a plate."

"The tapa is not a certain type of food. There are some rules, however:

Tapas are for getting people together. If you’re in a group, they’re not going to bring a plate just for you.
Ideally tapas are eaten standing up.
You shouldn’t have to use a knife."

"There is no other country in the world which has this form of eating, drinking and socializing."
