Donostia, internationally known as San Sebastián, Iñigo Iriarte transforms just 40 square metres into a succession of atmospheres, where each shift in material deliberately alters the perception of space. The eye lingers before it fully apprehends the place.
Xauen’s first gesture is to disorient the senses. At the entrance,
nothing gives away the function of the space. In the anteroom, the mosaic of marbles and the burgundy-stained wood evoke the entrance halls of old Donostia.
Classical mouldings frame
partially exposed plaster, variations in texture and stripped-back surfaces, as though the marks left by time had ceased to be traces to erase and had instead become the very material of the project.
The furniture mostly designed by the studio itself inhabits each setting through subtle variations in colour and form.
From the
bench inspired by train carriage seating to the deliberately lowered
sofa, every piece appears designed to suggest a different way of inhabiting the space. Mirrors extend the sense of depth, while the counter conceals the coffee machine, leaving only its taps visible to open up the perspective.
