Contracting Hall – La Llotja de Mar

The Sala de Contractacions at the Llotja de Mar is one of Barcelona’s great Gothic treasures.

This vast medieval trading hall, built between 1384 and 1397, was designed as a sheltered space where merchants could negotiate and close deals. It later became the seat of the Consulate of the Sea, the institution that regulated maritime commerce across the Mediterranean.

With its 14‑meter-high ceilings, four monumental columns, and six elegant Gothic arches, the hall feels like a stone cathedral dedicated to trade. The arches are decorated with scallop shells and the coats of arms of the king and the city, a reminder of the patrons who made its construction possible.

Over the centuries, this iconic space has witnessed everything: the first opera ever performed in Barcelona, the Jocs Florals medieval poetry contests and later, roles as a wheat store, performance venue, weapons magazine, and military barracks.

A place where Barcelona’s commercial, cultural, and civic history has unfolded for more than six centuries.

PEDRALBES' MONASTERY (BARCELONA)

Before becoming part of Barcelona, Pedralbes was just a small rural settlement. Today, we can step into its most remarkable legacy: the Monastery of Pedralbes, founded in 1326 by Queen Elisenda de Montcada. Its vast Gothic cloister, Ferrer Bassa´s frescoes, and the queen’s double-sided tomb still reveal a world where royal power and monastic life lived side by side. A quiet corner of the city where history breathes slowly.

At the entrance to the Gūell estate in Pedralbes, Gaudí leaves a warning: a colossal iron dragon stretching across the gate. Inspired in Verdaguer’s “L’Atlantida”, it’s Ladin, guardian of the golden apples. Early Gaudi at his boldest - parabolic arches, brick geometry, and a myth forged in iron.

Discovering Mercat de Santa Caterina: Colour, history, and flavour in the heart of Barcelona.

If you’re looking for an authentic corner of Barcelona where tradition and modern design come together, Mercat de Santa Caterina is a must‑see. Beneath its iconic wavy roof — a vibrant mosaic that ripples like a Mediterranean rainbow — you’ll find one of the city’s most lively and beloved markets.

Inside, long‑standing vendors mix with more contemporary stalls: fruit that looks like jewels, fish so fresh it feels like the sea just arrived with you, artisan cured meats, crusty breads… and of course, cosy bars where you can enjoy a tapa while watching the rhythm of the neighbourhood.

The market stands on the site of an old convent, and if you look closely, you can still feel that blend of history and renewal that defines Barcelona so well.

💛 Perfect for: food lovers, architecture fans, curious travellers, and anyone who enjoys wandering through local life.

📍 **Where**: Just steps from the Cathedral, right in the Born district.

If you haven’t visited yet, let yourself get lost among its colours and flavours. And if you already know it, I’d love to hear which stall is your favourite.
