Tonight, the city honors tradition and culture with an impressive spectacle at the La Mercè opening ceremony in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella! 🎆

The "toc d'inici" as it kicks off one of the city's most beloved festivals, filling the streets with colorful parades and music. When the bells toll seven, the opening speech takes place at Palau de la Virreina and then the real festival begins with the opening procession. You can follow them from Palau de la Virreina to Plaça de Sant Jaume where the city's gegants dance and the fire beasts join them in a fantastic display. Then, when the sun goes down, fireworks and flames light up the sky!

Don’t miss the start of a vibrant cultural week, including free concerts, fire runs and free museum days throughout the city, from September 23rd through the 27th. 🔥

La Mercè is more than just a festival; it's a display of Catalunya's legacy. Towering giants, fire breathing "bèsties," human towers, folkloric dance, traditional music, fire runs and free concerts fill every plaza and narrow street for five, non-stop days.

The "toc d'inici" defines the ambiance with theatrical performances throughout the Gothic Quarter in a celebration of civic pride that brings everyone together. Catch the big festival kick-off tomorrow, and check out our guide to La Mercè for a list of the festival's unmissable events. 👇
